    Introduction About This Guide This document describes the steps needed to unpack and install the Spectra 12K library. If you have questions about any of the procedures you can access more detailed documentation on the Spectra Logic Web site at: www.spectralogic.com.

    Spectra® 12K Library Unpacking and Installation Guide Prepare the Unpacking Location You will need 10 feet of access at the front and back of the crate to safely unpack the library. Once the library is out of the crate, you will need to move the library to a work space where you have access to all four sides.

  • Page 7 3. Use the scissors to cut the plastic bands holding the library and its boxes to the crate (Figure 2). Figure 2 Cut the plastic bands. 4. Remove the protective cardboard corners, and set aside the drive box(es) and rail kit (Figure 3).
  • Page 8 5. Remove the top and sides of the box used to enclose the library. 6. Remove the protective foam corners. 7. Lift the plastic cover off of the library (Figure 4). Figure 4 Remove the plastic cover. 8. Lift the library out of the crate and move the library to a work space where there is access to all sides of the library.

    Remove the Internal Packaging 1. Locate the library key. (It will be in a condiment bag attached to the top of the library.) 2. Use the key to unlock and open the front door of the library. 3. With the door opened, locate the robotic rack assembly and the 25-wire black connector at the bottom front of the library (Figure 5).

Note: Two of the top three screws are located at both ends of the top bracket that attaches to the library, and one screw is located just to the right of the robotic rack in the middle of the bracket.
  • Page 11 6. Prepare a safe place to work on the robotic rack assembly once it has been pulled out of the library. Caution: When removing the robotic rack assembly, ensure that the picker rack slides out easily and does not catch on any part of the library.
  • Page 12 8. Remove the strap that holds the foam and transport tray in place (Figure 8). Picker Strap Figure 8 The strap holding the foam and picker in place. i. Place the small flat head screwdriver under one side of the plastic clip on the picker strap to release the clip.
  • Page 13 9. Remove the three small pieces of packing foam from the transport tray assembly and remove any debris that remains from the foam. Be careful not to dislodge or bend any cables when removing the foam. 10. Verify that all visible cable connections are secure. 11.

    Check the Transport Tray and Picker Motion 1. Verify vertical axis motion by manually moving the transport tray up and down the length of the frame several times. Ensure that the tray moves smoothly and evenly (Figure 12). Figure 12 The transport tray moves up and down. 2.
  • Page 15 3. Rotate the entire gripper assembly in both directions (Figure 14). Note: The head will not rotate a full 360°, but it should rotate far enough in each direction so that the inventory sensor (on the back of the hood) can be positioned facing the tapes on either side of the library.

    Replace the Robotic Rack Assembly Caution: Before replacing the robotic rack, make sure the gripper assembly will not catch on any part of the library. The gripper assembly is a sensitive mechanism and can be easily damaged. 1. Rest the robotic rack assembly on the bottom of the library so it is centered in the opening.

Quad Interface Processors (QIPs) About the QIPs S-QIP The SCSI QIP (S-QIP) provides a SCSI interface between the host and the tape drives.

    QIP will depend on how you choose to partition the library. The bottom QIP supports the bottom four drive slots, the top QIP supports the top four drives. See the Spectra 12K Library User Guide for details. 1. Remove the QIP from the packaging and protective bag.

    Verify Drive Installation 1. From the General Status screen, select the Switch User icon (Figure 20). 2. In the User Login window, select the white field next to Username to view the virtual keyboard. Type in the Username SU, and then select OK on the virtual keyboard.

There are three columns of information displayed for each drive slot. The left column lists the drive number and whether or not it is installed. The center column lists the model number on the top line, then the firmware revision, and the serial number on the last line.

    You will not be able to run the necessary test unless at least one partition has been defined. To partition your library, you will need to use your Spectra 12K Library User Guide that was shipped with this library.

    Install New Picker Note: You must have created at least one partition in order to run the following test. 1. Select Toolbars, then select Maintenance. 2. Select the Diagnostics icon. 3. From the Diagnostics screen, select Advanced. 4. From the Available Test list, select Install New Picker, and select Prepare Test (Figure 27).
