Measure the diameter across the whole circumference
at a measuring point, taking note of the smallest and
largest value at a measuring point. The average value
of the smallest and largest value measured gives the
actual rope diameter at this measuring point. this mea-
suring method allows a statement about the rope's
ovalisation, i. e. the rope deformation. This may be
especially necessary to assess deformations caused
by multi-layer winding, see the PFEIFER original user's
guide "Stranded ropes for general lifting purposes
according to EN 12385-4".
• In case of new ropes, it is assumed that the diameter
is uniform along the entire rope length. The average
value of the actual rope diameters noted at both
measuring points thus represents the actual rope
diameter of the entire rope.

• If ropes are in operation, the diameter is subject to
certain fluctuations, meaning that the actual rope
diameter at any measuring point is only representative
for a particular area close to this measuring point.

Note 1: Because the diameter of ropes in operation can
vary considerably along its entire length, depending on
the usage behaviour, it is necessary to determine the
ACTUAL rope diameter in different areas/rope zones.
The measuring points of a rope zone should not be
too far apart in this case.
Note 2: Select the measuring points on the used rope
depending on requirements. Usually, the diameter values
are measured at different rope zones, e. g. in the win-
ding area on the drum, in the reeving and close to the
end connection. If rope wear is evident, measure the

affected areas in particular. Especially with mobile or
tower cranes, it is important to measure in the pitch and
parallel zones of each winding position to determine the
wear behaviour or in case of existing spooling faults.
To assess the uniform diameter reduction according to
DIN ISO 4309, in multi-layer winding it is not allowed to
measure in the incline zone.
The ropes must always be measured when straight.
Measuring it in a bent state is not permitted.

10. Measuring method

In this section, the measurement of the diameter at
a defined measuring point is described. Please note the
information regarding the purpose of the measurement,
selection of the measuring tool, and the measuring
point(s) from the previous section.
To measure the diameter, please proceed as follows:
1. The PFEIFER rope calliper gauge is switched on
by moving the measuring jaws or by pressing the
On/Off button.
2. Close the measuring jaws completely and check by
means of a light gap test that the measuring jaws
rest flat. In this state the calliper gauge is set to zero.
Remove possible contamination for example caused
by lubricants or sticking sand/dirt particles before
setting to zero.
3. Then place the measuring jaws onto the rope at right
angles to the rope axis.
4. These are placed onto the rope using medium pressure
on the measuring jaws in the area of the rope.
