Working Principle
A half-wave rectifier allows only the positive portion of an input AC signal
to pass through while blocking the negative portion. The circuit consists of
a diode, a load resistor, and an input AC voltage source. By adding a large
value capacitor in parallel to the load resistor, the rectified output will be
smoothened which acts like a DC signal. Comparing to a full-wave rectifier
which requires 4 diodes and an isolated grounding between inputs and
outputs, a half wave rectifier is less efficient but simple to implement and
cheaper.
