Selecting Headphones from the pulldown menu switches the slider at the top to use the
headphones port; selecting 2.0/2.1 or 5.1 switches the slider at the top to Speakers, to
use the speaker ports. Although headphones can be plugged into either the Light Green
or Dark Green port, it is highly recommended to use the Dark Green port, as this
enables certain features to be configured properly for headphones (e.g. SBX Surround).
By default, the selected speaker option is 2.0/2.1. This setup requires your audio device
to be plugged into the Light Green port. The only configuration option provided for
this setup is whether your speakers are Full-Range.
Speakers either fall into full-range or component speakers. Despite the speaker icon
switching between large and small when the full-range option is enabled or disabled,
respectively, actual speaker size has little to do with whether they are full-range or not.
Full-range speakers are designed using drivers that can independently output audio
across a wide frequency response of 20Hz-20,000Hz +/- 3dB at the same volume level.
When this setting is enabled, Creative will disable its crossover filter and send the full
frequency range to the speakers, whereupon the speakers will engage its own hardware
crossover filters to appropriately direct audio to the individual drivers.
If your speakers are not full-range, they will not have necessary hardware components to
play low frequencies, nor are they designed for that purpose. When the full-range
option is unchecked, the Pro Studio will instead send the full-signal out using crossover
filters or, as the Pro Studio calls it, bass redirection. This sort of signal will send out the
full audio frequency such that the majority of the frequency will go to the speakers, but
direct the low frequencies to a subwoofer. This way, you'll still get the same sound, but
you must select the correct options.
The "Speaker/Headphones" section will provide
configuration options for Speakers in a 2.0/2.1, 5.1
Surround, or Headphones. Please review the Component
Legend on Page 14 to make sure you connect your audio
device(s) to the correct port(s).
At the top, you'll notice a slider bar for Speakers or
Headphones. This option only has two selections, and
switches between your Speaker and Headphone settings.
You'll also see a pulldown menu, which features
Headphones, 2.0/2.1 and 5.1.
