(C.2045.02, CAN0 only) Figure 1: Block circuit diagram The CAN-PCIe/402 is a PC board designed for the PCIe bus, available in a wide choice of hardware designs. It features one (CAN-PCIe/402-1), two (CAN-PCIe/402-2) or four (CAN-PCIe/402-4/2Slot) electrically isolated CAN High-Speed interfaces according to ISO 11898-2.
The Classical CAN versions of CAN-PCIe/402 can only be used in Classical CAN applications because its controller is not CAN FD capable. The CAN FD versions of CAN-PCIe/402 are fully backwards compatible with CAN and can also be used in Classical CAN applications.

The independent CAN FD or CAN nets according to ISO 11898-1:2015 are driven by the esdACC (esd Advanced CAN Core) implemented in the Intel FPGA. The optional LIN extension CAN/402-Slot2-LIN is available as accessory for the esd CAN-PCIe/402- 2-FD board. For further information about the extension please refer to the hardware manual of CAN/402-Slot/2-LIN (1).

Hardware Installation If you are installing the CAN-PCIe/402-4/2Slot module with 4 CAN, you have to install the adapter board in the PCI Express slot next to the CAN-PCIe/402-2 board. Connect the two boards with the included ribbon cable (see Figure 4 on page 15) via the 10- pin shrouded box headers on the board and on the adapter.

Connector Pin Assignments 6 Connector Pin Assignments 6.1 CAN via DSUB9 This chapter applies to all CAN-PCIe/402 variants except CAN-PCI/402-B4(-FD) (C.2045.08 and C.2045.68) The two independent DSUB9 connectors of CAN0 and CAN1 and of the additional CAN interfaces CAN2 and CAN3 (CAN-PCI/402-4/2Slot) have the same pin assignment.
Connector Pin Assignments 6.2 CAN via DSUB37 (B4-Variants only) This chapter applies to the CAN-PCIe/402-B4(-FD) variants (C.2045.08 and C.2045.68) only. All four CAN interfaces are attached via DSUB37 panel connector with pin contacts. Pin Position: Pin Assignment: Signal Signal Channel...
The CAN-GND signals of the cables of the 4-channel cable adapter "CAN-PCI/4XX-B4- 1C4" are connected via the wire shield if the adapter is connected to the esd hardware. Thus, the housings of the 9-pin DSUB connectors are connected to the respective CAN- GND, because no other potential is available on these connectors.

Therefore, the maximum achievable number of nodes, bus lengths and stub lengths may differ from the theoretically possible number! esd has limited its recommendations for CAN wiring to the specifications of ISO 11898-2. 7.2.1 General Rules NOTICE esd grants the EU Conformity of the product, if the CAN wiring is carried out with at least single shielded single twisted pair cables that match the requirements of ISO 11898-2. Single shielded double twisted pair cable wiring as described in chapter 7.3 ensures the EU Conformity as well.
In principle the CAN bus must be realized in a line. The nodes are connected to the main • CAN bus line via short cable stubs. This is normally realised by so called T-connectors. esd offers the CAN-T-Connector (Order No.: C.1311.03) If a mixed application of single twisted and double twisted cables cannot be avoided, •...
6 Select a working combination of bit rate and cable length. 7 Keep away CAN cables from disturbing sources. If this cannot be avoided, double shielded cables are recommended. CAN bus line via short cable stubs. This is usually realised via so called T-connectors. When using esd's CAN-T-Connector (order no.: C.1311.03) in heavy industrial environment and with four-wire twisted cables, it must be noted that the shield potential of the conductive DSUB housing is not looped through this type of T-connector.
Table 9: Recommended cable lengths at typical bit rates (with esd-CAN interfaces) Optical couplers are delaying the CAN signals. esd modules typically achieve a wire length of 37 m at 1 Mbit/s within a proper terminated CAN network without impedance disturbances, such as those caused by cable stubs >...
CiA 106: “Connector pin-assignment recommendations ”. 7.6 Examples for CAN Cables esd recommends the following two-wire and four-wire cable types for CAN network design. These cable types are used by esd for ready-made CAN cables, too.
• All CAN_H and CAN_L lines are correctly connected. • Two terminating resistors of 120 Ω each are connected to your CAN network (one at each end). Page 40 of 48 Hardware Manual Doc. No.: C.2045.21 / Rev. 1.6 CAN-PCIe/402...
