Using the Laven Program
The scattering pattern for microparticles of this size can be calculated using a public domain program
available at http://www.philiplaven.com/mieplot.htm. The author is Philip Laven, of the European Broad-
casting Union, Geneva, Switzerland. Unfortunately, the program was not designed to be used with SALS
systems, so the option of plotting scattering intensity, I, against q value is not available. This means that q
®
values have to be calculated using, for example, Microsoft
Excel.
The Laven program main window is shown below. Some of the information that needs to be entered is
given on the Certificate of Analysis supplied with the microparticles. The other entries are either standard
values or are specific to the TA Instruments SALS system.
