Some common causes and solutions for keyboard and embedded
numeric keypad problems are listed in the following table.
NOTE: Consult the online Compaq Reference Guide on the use of
the NumLk key and the embedded numeric keypad.
Solving Keyboard and Numeric Keypad Problems
Problem
Embedded numeric
keypad on the
computer keyboard is
disabled.
External keyboard
does not work.
Keyboard and pointing
device are locked.
Probable Cause
Num Lock function is
not turned on.
Keyboard may not be
securely connected or
may be connected to
the wrong external
connector.
You initiated
QuickLock.
Solution
Press Fn+End/NumLk to enable
the Num Lock function and
embedded numeric keypad.
Ensure that the external keyboard
is securely connected to the
external keyboard connector.
Enter your power-on password to
exit QuickLock.
NOTE: If Num Lock is on (the
embedded numeric keypad is
active), hold down the Fn key
while typing to enter a non-
numeric password; pressing Fn
temporarily toggles Num Lock off.
Press Fn+Shift to type any
uppercase characters.
