This chapter provides details on how to install RAM and how to update system software. It also describes how to remove and reinstall the controller board. The controller board must be removed to install the following options: a SIMM upgrade, an internal hard disk, a Kanji font SIMM, an optional network LocalTalk or serial interface, or a 1200x1200 dpi Multi-Res daughterboard.

V Caution: It's very important to protect the printer controller board from electrostatic damage while performing this task. If an anti-static wrist strap is provided in your printer option kit, attach one end of it to your wrist and the other end to any convenient electrical ground (for example, the bare metal chassis of equipment, as on the back of a computer, that is plugged in but turned off).

  • Page 18: Single In-Line Memory Modules

Single in-line memory modules (or SIMMs) are compact circuit boards with surface-mount memory chips. Your QMS 2060 Print System comes with the following printer memory. However, you can upgrade any of these models to 128 MB of RAM through the installation of SIMMs.
  • Page 19 It's very important to protect the printer controller board from electrostatic damage while performing this SIMM installation. Please review the anti-static caution in “Removing the Controller Board” on page 2-2.
  • Page 20 Insert the SIMM into the SIMM connector. Hold the SIMM at a 45° angle to the controller board, with the notch on the right side and the bottom edge in the connector. » Note: You can insert a SIMM in any SIMM connector as long as DRAM0 and the SIMM connector before the one you’re installing are occupied.
  • Page 21 SIMM is seated completely in the connector. Repeat steps 3-5 for each additional SIMM being installing. Insert the controller board in the printer. Use the instructions in the “Reinstalling Controller Board” section, earlier in this chapter.
  • Page 22: Installing A Simm

Also, you must make sure that there is a total of at least 16 MB of RAM installed. If your printer has a hard disk, you must remove it before you can remove the last SIMM (DRAM3). See chapter 5, the ““Removing an Internal IDE Hard Disk”...
  • Page 23 If you want to install a SIMM, refer to “Installing a SIMM,” on page 2-6. Otherwise continue at step 6. Reinstall the controller board. The system software in your QMS 2060 Print System is stored in flash ROM, read-only memory that can be erased and rewritten to “in a flash.” This allows you to update the system software without open- ing up the printer and installing new PROMs.

The QMS 2060 Print System has many options which expand its capabilities. In addition to the two standard interfaces (CrownNet Ethernet and Centronics/IEEE 1284 parallel) your printer supports optional network interfaces such as DECnet-TCP/IP , IBM 3270/5250A, and CrownNet Token-Ring as well as a second CrownNet Ethernet interface. Addi- tional interface options allow greater flexibility when working in a com- plex network environment.
