Failure to Acquire and WV750 Beam Key Entry

Required Equipment:

Complete Winegard 2-Way WV750 Antenna System.
Viasat mobile modem.
Computer with Ethernet capability.

Purpose and Scope

The purpose of this paper is to explain how to manually enter beam key into a Viasat modem to properly point a WV750
system.
The failure mode that indicates the beam key may need to be entered is a failure to acquire the satellite signal. If the
Winegard WV750 antenna system is operating properly (searching) it is possible the modem contains the wrong satellite
information for the current location.
This is caused by 2 conditions. The first condition is caused by a modem that has not been commissioned and the second
condition is outdated modem firmware (including the beam data table, BDT). Firmware can become outdated if Viasat
pushes new firmware and the mobile system is not online.
In order to mitigate this issue mobile systems should be deployed as often as possible. The only way to completely
eliminate this problem is to connect the modem to a fixed antenna when the mobile system is not deployed.

Acquiring the Beam Key

Beam keys are generated by Viasat for specific locations. All Viasat service providers have access to these beam keys. If
the WV750 system searches normally but fails to acquire the satellite contact your service provider (not Winegard).
Your service provider will be able to access the Viasat Internet Portal or contact Viasat Technical Services and obtain the
correct beam key. Winegard does not have the ability to quickly obtain this information.
The beam key is a collection of 16 characters grouped into 4 banks of 4, XXXX – XXXX – XXXX – XXXX.

  • Page 3 Wait until the antenna starts raising and press the right arrow on the modem’s Installation Configuration screen. The screen should appear similar to the following screen shot. At this point the antenna should lock on to the correct signal and automatically download updated firmware. Once the antenna has acquired the satellite the modem status and software versions can be viewed by navigating to the modem status page at http://192.168.100.1/?page=modemStatus...
