Table 27: TIG (L-GTAW) welding problems
Type of fault
Excessive bead build up or poor
penetration or poor fusion at
edges of weld.
Weld bead is too wide and flat or
undercut at edges of weld or
excessive burn through.
Weld bead is too small or
insufficient penetration or ripples
in bead are widely spaced apart.

The travel speed is too fast.
The travel speed is too slow.
Wrong placement of filler the
rod.
The TIG torch lead connected
to positive welding terminal.
No gas flowing to welding
region.
The TIG torch is clogged with
dust or dirt.
The gas hose is cut.
Gas passage contains dirt.
Gas regulator turned OFF.
TIG torch valve is turned OFF.
The electrode is too small for
the welding current.
The power source is set for
MIG welding.
Electrode contaminated by
contact with workpiece or filler
rod material.
Work piece surface has foreign
material on it.
Gas contaminated with air.
Inadequate shielding gas.

Corrective action
Increase the weld current
and/or faulty joint preparation.
Decrease the weld current.
Reduce the travel speed.
Increase the travel speed.
Re-position filler rod.
Connect the TIG torch lead to
negative welding terminal.
Check the gas lines for kinks or
breaks and gas cylinder
contents.
Clean the TIG torch.
Replace the gas hose.
Disconnect the gas hose from
the rear of power source then
raise the gas pressure and
blow out dirt.
Turn ON.
Turn ON.
Increase the electrode diameter
or reduce the welding current.
Set the power source to LIFT
TIG mode.
Clean the electrode by grinding
off the contaminates.
Clean the surface.
Check the gas lines for cuts
and loose fitting or change gas
cylinder.
Increase the gas flow or check
the gas line for gas flow
problems.
