FUN FACTS
• Coffee beans are seeds. We call them beans because of their
resemblance to legumes, but they come from cherry-like coffee
plants.
• Decaf coffee is not 100% caffeine free. An 8 oz cup of decaf coffee
typically contains 2 to 12 mg of caffeine as compared to a standard
cup that has at least 95 mg.
• Johann Sebastian Bach wrote a mini opera about coffee called
"Be Still, Stop Chattering."
• Caffeine was identified as coffee's active ingredient in the 1830s
after it got the attention of European politicians who feared the
"wild potion's" abilities.
• Receptors in our noses shut down after being continually exposed
to the same smell over time. That's why we become "nose blind." A
proven way to stop "nose blindness," or olfactory habituation, is to
reset our sense of smell by sniffing coffee beans. That's why small
cups of coffee beans are often found in perfume shops.
• In 1964, a Long Island national convenience store chain was the
first to offer fresh coffee in to-go cups.
