Programme Type (PTY)
This code gives the receiver information about the type of the transmitted programme (e.g. sports, classic, news etc.).
The listener can select his favourite programme purposefully.
A national disaster alarm can also be transmitted this way. However, not all radio stations offer the PTY service.
Therefore, when you leave the transmission area, the RDS system favourably automatically switches to a similar
station that can be better received. However, it only switches when it finds a better station with the same programme.
The RDS system cannot eliminate short signal attenuations associated with the reception since this would mean
that the car radio permanently switches back and forth. That would disturb the listener even more than short-term
reception problems.
Another advantage of the RDS system is that the station name is displayed. The RDS station name is shown on the
display of the car radio.
