When rack-mounting the Symantec appliance, consider the following: A. Elevated Operating Ambient—If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment may be greater than room ambient.

After removing a board from its protective wrapper or from the server, place the board component side up on a grounded, static free surface. Standby power is always on as long as a power source is connected to the power supply units.

  • Page 22 Symantec S450 Series Safety and Compliance Guide Installing Fans The fan cover opens to reveal the appliance’s eight fans, numbered 1–8 from left to right, which maintain the unit’s optimal temperature for system components. Fans are hot-swappable and include a status LED just below the fan on the motherboard.

Insert the replacement fan, orienting it with the arrow toward the rear of the appliance and aligning it with the fan slot on the motherboard.

A failed power supply can be replaced while the appliance is powered by the other power supply unit. CAUTION! Never remove a power supply that is currently powering the appliance (powered on). Doing so will cause the system to fail and potentially lead to disk corruption.

    Symantec S450 Series Safety and Compliance Guide Removing the Rear Cover Removal of the rear cover provides access to the appliance’s riser cards, network expansion cards, and DIMM slots. The center fan cover also opens, providing access to the unit’s eight fans, but does not detach (see “Installing Fans” on page 22).

    Symantec S450 Series Safety and Compliance Guide Installing the Slide Rails The slide-rail mounting kit included with the S450 allows it to be rack-mounted in a two- or four-post equipment rack. The kit provides tool-less racking for 4-post racks and allows the appliance to be installed or removed from either the front or rear of the rack.

WARNING! The appliance is very heavy. A two-person lift or mechanical aid is recommended to lift the appliance from the rack.
