PC
PC Selection
Selecting a right PC for an access control system is very important and can be a challenge. The following
guidance notes are designed to help you through the selection process.
Some of the considerations are as follows:
Single PC or Client / Server PC configuration
Dedicated or shared use of the PC server or workstation
System features being used
Terms used in Table 1:
Dedicated: refers to a PC that is used entirely for the access control system. The only other applications
loaded are those needed to maintain the PC. (Antivirus, backup software etc.)
Shared: refers to a PC that is used for access control, but also for one or more applications such as
Accounts, Contact management Building Management, DVR, etc.
24/7: means that the PC is available 24 hours day 365 days a year. This PC would ideally have a UPS
to protect against power failure and be in a location not to be disturbed.
8/5: means 8 hours a day 5 days a week. This would be a normal desk top or notebook PC workstation
that is switched off at the end of the day and may not be available at weekends.
Single PC This means that the access control software is only installed on a single PC. So it is
responsible for both server and client features.
Server PC This is a PC that is only responsible for running the server part of the access control
software. It may have a copy of the client components but these are only used for maintenance.
Client PC This is a PC that has only had the client components of the access control software installed.
This workstation is used in conjunction with a Server PC. This PC is only responsible for the client
features of the system.
