    The 8471 is designed with full consideration given to the noise contained in the AC power line. Nev- ertheless, it is recommended that the 8471 be used in an environment with as little line noise as pos- sible. If line noise is unavoidable, use a noise filter.

    1.3.3 Power Fuse CAUTION: If the power fuse opens, a problem may have occurred in the 8471. Contact an ADC Corporation sales repre- sentative. Always use the same fuse type and rating to prevent fire. The power fuse is placed in the fuse holder on the rear panel.

    Only ADC authorized service personnel can open the case. The 8471 contains high-temperature and high-voltage components. If an abnormality occurs If the 8471 issues smoke, a bad odor, or unusual sound, turn off the power switch. Pull out the power cable from the outlet and contact an ADC Corporation sales representative. Warming up After the 8471 is at room temperature, turn the power on and allow it to warm up for approximately one hour.

Before disposal, remove the following parts from the product to prevent dispersal of substances that may adversely affect the environment, human health, or the ecosystem.

    Dirt on the end face of the internal connector in the optical input section may decrease the input sensitivity. Thus, be sure to connect the connector with its end face kept clean to the 8471.     Cleaning Remove dust from the outside of the 8471 by wiping or brushing the surface with a soft cloth or small brush. Use a brush to remove dust from around the panel keys. Hardened dirt can be removed by using a cloth which has been dampened in water containing a mild detergent.

    1.8.4 Transport To transport the 8471, use the original box that it came in. If the box is not available any longer, pack the 8471 in accordance with the following guidelines. Prepare a corrugated cardboard box with dimensions that are larger than the external dimensions of the 8471 by 15 cm or more to allow for shock absorbent material.

    The maximum total power that can be measured is +10dBm. The maximum total power that can be input is +13dBm. CAUTION: The 8471 is a Class 1 laser product. Do not look into the input connector directly. Do not allow the total power of input signals to exceed +13dBm, otherwise the 8471 may be broken.

NOTE: The operation procedures listed permit the settings to be made in the shortest time. If the display differs from the one shown, repeat the procedure from the beginning.

    3.2 Wavelength Measurement Wavelength Measurement In wavelength measurement for the 8471, the measured wavelengths can be converted to vacuum wave- lengths or standard air wavelengths. "VAC" is displayed following the measured value for vacuum wave- lengths as "152.356 nm VAC." Similarly, "AIR" is displayed is for standard air wavelengths. The measurement procedure after setup is described below.

The air refractive index depends on the air density (or atmospheric pressure). The measurement results obtained from the 8471 are compensated for the air density by entering the current elevation.

The Enable Reg- ister sets the relevant bit in decimal values. Each Enable Register is set to 0 as default. Only the measurement event enable register is reset at power OFF.
