    Seats and Seat Controls This section tells you about the seats them, take them out and put them back in. It also tells you about bucket and bench seats, power seats and head restraints. Manual Front Seats CAUTION: You can lose control of the vehicle if you try to adjust a manual driver’s seat while the vehicle is moving.
  • Page 10 Manual Lumbar Support (If Equipped) If your vehicle has this feature, there will be a knob located on the inboard side of the driver’s and passenger’s bucket seats. Turn the knob toward the front of the vehicle to increase lumbar support. Turn the knob toward the rear of the vehicle to decrease lumbar support.

    Reclining Seatbacks There is a lever located on the inside of the seat to adjust the seatback. You can adjust the seatback by lifting the lever and leaning back. Release the lever to lock the seatback where you want it. Pull up on the lever, lean forward and the seatback will go to an upright position.

    CAUTION: Sitting in a reclined position when your vehicle is in motion can be dangerous. Even if you buckle up, your safety belts can’t do their job when you’re reclined like this. The shoulder belt can’t do its job because it won’t be against your body.

    Seatback Latches The seatback lever is located on the right rear of your seat. To fold your non bench seatback forward, pull up on the latch release lever while pulling the seatback toward the rear of the vehicle. After the latch has been released, push the seatback toward the front of the vehicle until it locks into place.

    Rear Seats Bucket Seats (If Equipped) Your vehicle may have rear bucket seats with an adjustment release bar located under the front of the seats. These seats can be adjusted forward or rearward with the release bar. Pull the release bar up to release the seat bottom.
  • Page 15 To adjust your seatback, pull up on the lever located on the outboard side of the seat cushion. To raise or lower the center console, press the button located between the beverage holders. Sit in the center seating position only when the console is in an upright and locked position.
  • Page 16 Removing the Rear Seats To remove the rear seats, do the following: 1. If you are removing the center seat, remove the right lap To do this, press the tip of a key into the release hole of the safety belt attachment while pulling up on the safety belt.
  • Page 17 5. Lift up on the left and the right seat release levers at the same time. The latches are near the floor on the rear legs of the seat. 1-10 6. Lift up on the rear of the seat to remove the seat assembly from the rear latch pins.
  • Page 18 Replacing the Rear Seats 1. Lower the seat into position. Make sure the front retainers are hooked onto the anchor pins. 2. Pull the seat down to latch the rear retainers. Make sure the seat is locked in by pulling up and down on the seat.

Unlock the seatback latch by pushing up on the latch release lever at the right rear of the seat, while pushing down on the upper edge of the seatback. B. Move the seatback into the upright position. Make sure the seatback is locked when it is back in the upright position.

    If I’m a good driver, and I never drive far from home, why should I wear safety belts? You may be an excellent driver, but if you’re in an accident even one that isn’t your fault and your passengers can be hurt. Being a good driver doesn’t protect you from things beyond your control, such as bad drivers.

  • Page 27 Shoulder Belt Height Adjuster Before you begin to drive, move the shoulder belt adjuster to the height that is right for you. 1-20 To move it down, push it in at the top of the arrows and move the height adjuster to the desired position. You can move the adjuster up just by pushing up on the shoulder belt guide.
  • Page 28 What’s wrong with this? The shoulder belt is too loose. It won’t give nearly as much protection this way. CAUTION: You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt is too loose. In a crash, you would move forward too much, which could increase injury.

In a crash, you can slide under the belt. The belt force would then be applied at the abdomen, not at the pelvic bones, and that could cause serious or fatal injuries.

It should be worn over the shoulder at all times. 1-24 CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury.
  • Page 32 What’s wrong with this? The belt is twisted across the body. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured by a twisted belt. In a crash, you wouldn’t have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. If a belt is twisted, make it straight so it can work properly, or ask your dealer to fix it.

    To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. The belt should go back out of the way. Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way. If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle.

    The best way to protect the fetus is to protect the mother. When a safety belt is worn properly, it’s more likely that the fetus won’t be hurt in a crash. For pregnant women, as for anyone, the key to making safety belts effective is wearing them properly.
  • Page 35 CAUTION: Air bags inflate with great force, faster than the blink of an eye. If you’re too close to an inflating air bag, as you would be if you were leaning forward, it could seriously injure you. Safety belts help keep you in position before and during a crash.
  • Page 36 United States There is an air bag readiness light on the instrument panel, which shows AIR BAG or the air bag symbol. The system checks the air bag electrical system for malfunctions. The light tells you if there is an electrical problem.
  • Page 37 The right front passenger’s air bag is in the instrument panel on the passenger’s side. 1-30 CAUTION: If something is between an occupant and an air bag, the bag might not inflate properly or it might force the object into that person causing severe injury or even death.
  • Page 38 When should an air bag inflate? An air bag is designed to inflate in a moderate to severe frontal or near frontal crash. The air bag will inflate only if the impact speed is above the system’s designed “threshold level.” If your vehicle goes straight into a wall that doesn’t move or deform, the threshold level is about 9 to 16 mph (14 to 26 km/h).
  • Page 39 What will you see after an air bag inflates? After an air bag inflates, it quickly deflates, so quickly that some people may not even realize the air bag inflated. Some components of the air bag module the steering wheel hub for the driver’s air bag, or the instrument panel for the right front passenger’s bag will be hot for a short time.
  • Page 40 Your vehicle is equipped with a crash sensing and diagnostic module, which records information about the air bag system. The module records information about the readiness of the system, when the system commands air bag inflation and driver’s safety belt usage at deployment.

    Adding Equipment to Your Air Bag-Equipped Vehicle If I add a push bumper or a bicycle rack to the front of my vehicle, will it keep the air bags from working properly? As long as the push bumper or bicycle rack is attached to your vehicle so that the vehicle’s basic structure isn’t changed, it’s not likely to keep the air bags from working properly in a crash.
  • Page 42 Shoulder Belt These positions have lap shoulder belts. Here’s how to wear one properly. 1. Pick up the latch plate and pull the belt across you. Don’t let it get twisted. 2. Push the latch plate into the buckle until it clicks. If the belt stops before it reaches the buckle, tilt the latch plate and keep pulling until you can buckle it.

    Rear Safety Belt Comfort Guides for Children and Small Adults Your vehicle may have rear shoulder belt comfort guides. This feature will provide added safety belt comfort for older children who have outgrown booster seats and for small adults. When installed on a shoulder belt, the comfort guide better positions the belt away from the neck and head.
  • Page 46 2. Slide the guide under and past the belt. The elastic cord must be under the belt. Then, place the guide over the belt, and insert the two edges of the belt into the slots of the guide. 3. Be sure that the belt is not twisted and it lies flat. The elastic cord must be under the belt and the guide on top.

    4. Buckle, position and release the safety belt as described in “Rear Seat Outside Passenger Positions” earlier in this section. Make sure that the shoulder belt crosses the shoulder. To remove and store the comfort guides, squeeze the belt edges together so that you can take them out of the guides.

    Lap Belt If your vehicle has rear bench seats, someone can sit in the center positions. When you sit in a center seating position, you have a lap safety belt, which has no retractor. To make the belt longer, tilt the latch plate and pull it along the belt. To make the belt shorter, pull its free end as shown until the belt is snug.

    Children Everyone in a vehicle needs protection! This includes infants and all other children. Neither the distance traveled nor the age and size of the traveler changes the need, for everyone, to use safety restraints. In fact, the law in every state in the United States and in every Canadian province says children up to some age must be restrained while in a vehicle.

  • Page 51 What are the different types of add child restraints? on child restraints, which are purchased by the vehicle’s owner, are available in four basic types. Selection of a particular restraint should take into consideration not only the child’s weight, height and age but also whether or not the restraint will be compatible with the motor vehicle in which it will be used.
  • Page 52 CAUTION: The body structure of a young child is quite unlike that of an adult or older child, for whom the safety belts are designed. A young child’s hip bones are still so small that the vehicle’s regular safety belt may not remain low on the hip bones, as it should.

This is necessary because a newborn infant’s neck is weak and its head weighs so much compared with the rest of its body. In a crash, the two children can be crushed together and seriously injured. A belt must be used by only one person at a time. What if a child is wearing a lap but the child is so small that the shoulder belt is very close to the child’s face or neck?

If the child wears the belt in this way, in a crash the child might slide under the belt. The belt’s force would then be applied right on the child’s abdomen.

    Safety Belt Extender If the vehicle’s safety belt will fasten around you, you should use it. But if a safety belt isn’t long enough to fasten, your dealer will order you an extender. It’s free. When you go in to order it, take the heaviest coat you will wear, so the extender will be long enough for you.

A child can be overcome by the extreme heat and can suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke.     Manual Windows To open your manual windows, turn the hand crank on each door to raise or lower your side door windows. Power Windows (Option) If you have power windows, the controls are located on each of the front doors. The driver’s door also has a switch for the front passenger window.

    Front Doors To open a front door from the outside, grasp the handle and pull the door open. To open a front door from the inside, pull the lever toward you and push the door open. Rear Doors If you have the “Dutch doors,” you must open the hatch first.
  • Page 80 To open the driver’s side rear door, pull on the latch release handle located on the inside of the door. To close the rear doors, close the driver’s side door first. Check to make sure both doors are completely closed. The rear doors have a check assembly to keep the doors from opening beyond 90 degrees.

    Door Locks CAUTION: Unlocked doors can be dangerous. Passengers especially children easily open the doors and fall out of a moving vehicle. When a door is locked, the handle won’t open it. You increase the chance of being thrown out of the vehicle in a crash if the doors aren’t locked.
  • Page 82 Power Door Locks (If Equipped) If your vehicle has power door locks, press the power door lock switch located on the door panel to lock or unlock all the doors at once. The power door lock switch will lock or unlock the rear hatch and Dutch doors.

    3. You are now ready to program the automatic door locks. Select one of the following four programming options and follow the instructions. You will have thirty seconds to begin programming. If you exceed the thirty second limit, the locks will automatically lock and unlock to indicate that you have left the program mode.

    Panic Alarm Button When the panic button with the horn symbol on the keyless entry transmitter is pressed, the horn will sound and the headlamps and taillamps will flash for up to 30 seconds. This can be turned off by pressing the panic button again, waiting for 30 seconds, or starting the vehicle.

    To replace the battery, do the following: 1. Insert a thin object like a dime to separate the bottom of the transmitter from the top. 2. Remove the battery and replace it with a new one, making sure the positive (+) side of the battery is facing down.

    Sliding Door Security Lock Your vehicle is equipped with a sliding door security lock that helps to prevent young children or other passengers from opening the sliding door using the inside door handle. The security door lock is located near the front of the sliding door.
  • Page 88 Canceling the Sliding Door Security Lock To cancel the security lock, do the following: 1. Unlock the door and open it from the outside. 2. Move the lever all the way down. CAUTION: If your vehicle is facing downward on a steep grade (15 percent or more), the door may not stay open and could slam shut, possibly injuring someone.
  • Page 89 Rear Hatch/Rear Doors CAUTION: It can be dangerous to drive with the rear hatch or rear doors open because carbon monoxide (CO) gas can come into your vehicle. You can’t see or smell CO. It can cause unconsciousness and even death. If you must drive with the rear hatch or rear doors open or if electrical wiring or other cable connections must pass through the seal between...
  • Page 90 To open the hatch, unlock it, then press the button and lift the handle located in the center of the door. To lock the power lock system from the outside, insert the key in the hatch release button and turn it clockwise. All doors will lock.
  • Page 91 Passlock Your vehicle is equipped with the Passlock theft deterrent system. Passlock is a passive theft deterrent system. Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinder is turned with a valid key. If a correct key is not used or the ignition lock cylinder is tampered with, fuel is disabled.

    Ignition Positions With the key in the ignition, you can turn it to five different positions. A (ACCESSORY): This position lets you use things like the radio, power windows and windshield wipers when the engine is off. To get into ACCESSORY, push in the key and turn it toward you.

    C (OFF): This position lets you turn off the engine but still turn the steering wheel. Use OFF if you must have your vehicle in motion while the engine is off (for example, if your vehicle is being towed). D (RUN): This is the position for driving. E (START): This position starts your engine.

    Engine Coolant Heater (If Equipped) In very cold weather, 0 _ F ( 18 _ C) or colder, the engine coolant heater can help. You’ll get easier starting and better fuel economy during engine warm Usually, the coolant heater should be plugged in a minimum of four hours prior to starting your vehicle.

    Automatic Transmission Operation There are several different positions for your shift lever. PARK (P): This position locks your rear wheels. It’s the best position to use when you start your engine because your vehicle can’t move easily. CAUTION: It is dangerous to get out of your vehicle if the shift lever is not fully in PARK (P) with the parking brake firmly set.
  • Page 97 REVERSE (R): Use this gear to back up. NOTICE: Shifting to REVERSE (R) while your vehicle is moving forward could damage your transmission. Shift to REVERSE (R) only after your vehicle is stopped.     Brakes Brake Fluid Your brake master cylinder reservoir is filled with 3 brake fluid. See “Engine Compartment Overview” in the Index for the location of the reservoir. There are only two reasons why the brake fluid level in the reservoir might go down. The first is that the brake fluid goes down to an acceptable level during normal brake lining wear.

If it isn’t, have your brake system checked to see if there is a leak. After work is done on the brake hydraulic system, make sure the level is above the MIN but not over the MAX mark.

    NOTICE: Using the wrong fluid can badly damage brake system parts. For example, just a few drops of mineral based oil, such as engine oil, in your brake system can damage brake system parts so badly that they’ll have to be replaced.

    Some driving conditions or climates may cause a brake squeal when the brakes are first applied or lightly applied. This does not mean something is wrong with your brakes. Properly torqued wheel nuts are necessary to help prevent brake pulsation. When tires are rotated, inspect brake pads for wear and evenly tighten wheel nuts in the proper sequence to GM torque specifications.
