Factors Affecting Grooming

There are a number of factors that can affect the perfor-
mance of grooming. These factors vary for different golf
courses and from green to green. It is important to in-
spect the turf frequently and vary the grooming practice
with turf needs.
It is important to remember that factors affecting quality
of cut also affect grooming performance.
Variables That Affect the Use and Performance of Grooming Reels:
1. The growing season and weather conditions.
2. General turf conditions.
3. The frequency of grooming/cutting – number of cut-
tings per week and how many passes per cutting.
4. The blade spacing on the groomer reel.
5. The height–of–cut.
6. The grooming depth.
7. The type of grass on the green.
8. The amount of time that a groomer reel has been in
use on a particular turf area.
9. The amount of traffic on the turf.
10.The overall turf management program – irrigation,
fertilizing, weed control, coring, overseeding, sand
dressing, and disease and pest control.
11. Stress periods for turf – high temperatures, high hu-
midity, unusually high traffic.

IMPORTANT: Improper or overaggressive use of
the groomer reel, such as too deep or frequent
grooming, may cause unnecessary stress on the
turf leading to severe turf damage. Use the groomer
carefully. READ AND UNDERSTAND THE OPERA-
TION INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE OPERATING OR
TESTING GROOMER PERFORMANCE.
