Intermittent or Dropped Connection

Modem Configuration
• Have you specified the correct modem manufacturer when you selected
the modem setting?
• If you specified an Over-ride Initialization String for the modem, is this
string correct?
• Is the modem set up for Point-to-Point Communications? The 5500
Control Unit does not support Multi-Point Communications.
• Is the modem set up to originate? The 5500 Control Unit is set up to
originate calls, and the host should be set up to answer.
• Can the modem be put into command mode? Take the modem to a PC to
verify correct operations, and then reconnect the modem to the 5500
Control Unit.
Host Configuration
• Is the Host communication line varied on? If not, the host modem may
not answer and data transfer will not begin.
• Is the Host configured for Half-duplex communications rather than
Duplex?
• Check the Host and the Host modem for similar problems as listed above.
Intermittent connection problems with the host could occur if a true
connection was never accomplished and the host disconnected from the 5500
Control Unit. This scenario could appear as a connection that was dropped.
After a true connection is made, other factors may be responsible for a
disconnect:
Check for Incomplete Connections as follows:
• Verify that the host User ID and Password are correct. If not, a connection
may be established, but then dropped after the host fails to authenticate
the 5500 Control Unit.
• Is the Authentication setting (Encrypted verses Any) what the host is
expecting?
• A 5500 IP address is required for SLIP (and is optional for PPP). Is the
value specified correct?
• Is the host modem set to auto-answer, but the host software isn't
operational?
• Is the host communication port varied on?
• The items listed below could also be responsible for an incomplete
connection. Dropped connections can be caused at the 5500 Control Unit
or the host. Both sides need to be checked for the following:
