Telnet usage conventions

The Telnet interface makes use of the following conventions:
v Items in <angle brackets> can be toggled among several choices through the
spacebar.
v Items in [square brackets] can be changed by typing in a new value. You can
use the backspace and delete keys to erase characters behind and in front of
the cursor.
v The up and down arrow keys, the left and right arrow keys, the tab key, and
the backspace key, can be used to move between selected items.
v Items in UPPERCASE are commands. Moving the selection to a command
and pressing Enter will process that command; for example, APPLY, and so
on.
Important: The command APPLY makes changes to the switch configuration
for the current session only. If you want your changes to be permanent, select
Save Changes from the main menu. Selecting Save Changes enters the current
switch configuration, including all changes, into NVRAM, and then restarts the
switch module.

First-time connection to the Ethernet switch module

The switch module supports user-based security that can allow you to prevent
unauthorized users from accessing the switch module or changing its settings.
This section tells how to log onto the switch module.
Note: The passwords used to access the switch module are case-sensitive;
therefore, an uppercase S is not the same as a lowercase s.
Complete the following steps to connect to the switch module through the
Telnet interface:
1. Display a window that contains a DOS prompt command line; for example,
C:\>.
2. Type the following command on the DOS prompt command line and press
Enter: telnet x
where x is the IP address for your switch module
When you first connect to the switch module, the login window (shown in the
following illustration) appears.
Note: Press Ctrl+R to refresh the window. This command can be used at any
time to force the program in the switch module to refresh the current
window.
