Suction Line
1. Install a new, clean pipe or hose, making sure pip-
ing rises vertically or continually from the water
source to the pump inlet connection with no high
spots.
• The total suction lift should not exceed 25 ft of
head.
• Piping should never be smaller than the pump
inlet size of 1-1/4" (FNPT). Increase by one size if
a large distance is between the pump and the
water source.
• Avoid attaching an elbow directly to the pump
suction.
• To avoid air pockets, slope horizontal pipes con-
tinuously upward from water source to pump by
at least 1 vertical inch for every 30" of Horizontal
run.
2. Install a foot valve to the end of the suction line to
ensure system remains filled during off periods.
3. If the distance from the well to the pump is more
than 40 feet, a check valve (installed close to the
pump) is recommended in addition to the foot
valve.
• A check valve is necessary for pumping from a drive point well where the suction line is driven
into the ground to extract the surrounding groundwater.
• A foot valve is more suitable for a cased/dug
well.
• Either can be used for pumping from a lake or stream, provided the end of the suction pipe is
also protected by a strainer.
4. Tighten all connections thoroughly to avoid air leaks, preventing complete prime.
Discharge Line
1. Install a tee with removable plug to facilitate
priming the pump and suction line.
2. Install a new, clean discharge pipe or hose
suitable for pumping pressures.
• The size should be the same as the dis-
charge thread opening, never smaller.
• Use lengths only as necessary to reach the
discharge point, increasing the pipe/hose
size only if long line lengths are required.
• Avoid using restrictive reducing fittings if
possible and using unnecessary bends in
lines.
3. Install the pump using both gate valves and
union connections to isolate the pump when
service is required.
4. Tighten all connections thoroughly.
