Important Notes
Please read before installing.
1. CAUTION: For control of permanently installed incandescent lamp fixtures and low-voltage trans-
former loads, motor loads, or fluorescent fixtures only. To avoid overheating and possible damage to
other equipment, do not use to control receptacles or transformer-supplied appliances.
2. Install in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.
3. When no "grounding means" exist within the wallbox then the NEC
switch without a grounding connection to be installed as a replacement, as long as a plastic, non-
combustible wallplate is used. For this type of installation, cap or remove the green ground wire on
the switch and use an appropriate wallplate such as Lutron's Claro
4. For new installations, install a test switch before installing the switch.
5. Protect switch from dust and dirt when painting or spackling.
6. Clean switch with a soft damp cloth only. Do not use any chemical cleaners.
Multigang Installations
When installing more than one control in the
same wallbox, it may be necessary to remove
all inner side sections prior to wiring (see dia-
gram). If pre-installed, remove the Lutron
wallplate and wallplate adapter from switch.
Using pliers, bend side section up and down
until it breaks off. Repeat for each side section
to be removed. Note: No derating required if
ganged.

Turning OFF power.
• Turn power OFF at circuit breaker (or remove fuse).
Removing wallplate and switch.
• Remove wallplate and switch mounting screws.
• Carefully remove switch from wall (do not remove wires).
Caution: Verify power
is OFF to switch
before proceeding.
Identifying the type of circuit.

3-WAY:
Insulated wires connected to three screws. One of
OR these wires is connected to a screw of a different-
color (not green) or labeled COMMON. MARK or
TAG this wire to identify it when wiring. Replace
with a 3-WAY switch. See Step 5b when wiring.

When making wire connections, follow the recom-
mended strip lengths and combinations for the sup-
plied wire connectors. Note: Wire connectors pro-
vided are suitable for copper wire only. For alu-
minum wire, consult an electrician.
Strip insulation 1/2" (13 mm) for 10, 12 or 14 AWG wire
Strip insulation 5/8" (16 mm) for 16 or 18 AWG wire
Use to join one or two 12 or 14 AWG supply wires
with one 10, 12, 14, 16, or 18 AWG control wire.
Twist wire connector tight.

5 5 Wiring the Switch.
• For installations involving more than one control in a wallbox, refer to
the section on Multigang Installations before beginning.
• To use a 3-way switch (black, red and red/white wires) in a single-pole
application, cap off the red/white wire and follow instructions for sin-
gle-pole wiring.
Depending on model number, the
switch may include a Lutron Claro
wallplate. If so, please remove the front
piece of the wallplate from the adapter before
installing. This will expose switch mounting holes
and prevent wallplate damage while installing switch.

Attach standard wallplate. Attach Claro wallplate.

Turning ON power.
• Turn power ON at circuit breaker (or replace fuse).

• Connect the green switch ground
wire to the bare copper or green
ground wire in the wallbox. (See
Important Note 3.)
• Connect one of the black switch
wires to either of the wires
removed from the switch.
• Connect the remaining black
switch wire to the other wire
removed from the switch.

• Connect the green switch ground
wire to the bare copper or green
ground wire in the wallbox. (See
Important Note 3.)
• Connect the black switch wire to
the wire removed from the differ-
ent-colored screw on the switch
(marked or tagged wire) in Step 3.
Remove tag from wire.
• Connect the red switch wire to
either of the remaining wires
removed from the switch.
• Connect the red/white switch
wire to the remaining wire
removed from the switch.
