7.3

Uses of the IAM

The IAM has three possible uses, which are all based on the method given below.
7.3.1 General IAM method
1. Slowly open the needle valve (pos. 13) and allow small bubbles of the head gas to
bubble through the lye in the IAM.
If the liquid does not foam up after opening the needle valve, the bottle must be tapped
using a hammer (the foaming action forces the head gas out of the bottle).
2. Close the needle valve when gas no longer escapes from the bottle
or can or as soon as liquid from the bottle or can enters the IAM's
hose.
3. Slide the leveller barrel (pos. 103) so that the liquid in the leveller
barrel and the measuring burette (pos. 111) are at the same level
(the hydrostatic pressure on the gas pocket will be neutralized and
the correct volume will be indicated).
4. Open the sealing tap (pos. 112) and allow a small amount of lye to
flow along the edge of the measuring chamber (this is now filled with
air).
5. Adjust the liquid level in the leveller barrel and the measuring
burette again so that they are the same.
6. Read the level on the IAM (the bottom of the meniscus) in ml.
7. Slide the leveller barrel upwards (maximum position) and open the sealing tap so that
the air can escape from the measuring burette.
8. Close the sealing tap.
7.3.2 Determining the air content in the head gas
Read the general method and follow the instructions below for the following uses.
1. Checking the filling unit
=> Do not shake the bottle or can. Close the needle valve in time to prevent the lye from
entering the bottle or can.
2. Correcting the CO
=> Shake the bottle or can beforehand. Close the needle valve in time to prevent beer from
flowing into the lye.
7.3.3 Determining the total air content in a bottle or can
Read the general method and follow the instructions below for the following use.
3. Determining the total air content
=> Do not initially shake the bottle or can. Allow the head gas to escape and then shake the
bottle or can immediately, together with the ICC-2000, and then allow the gas to escape again.
Repeat this until no more gas is released.
