Preparing a lye solution

Warning
Note!
For the absorption of CO
recommended. If this is not available, you can use a 20% NaOH solution as an alternative.
However, note that the reaction time in a KOH solution is shorter, which means that the
measurement can be carried out more quickly.
As soon as the reaction starts working more slowly, or you suspect that not all of the CO
being absorbed any longer, you should replace the lye solution. You should also replace the lye
solution if precipitation occurs.
The number of measurements that can be made with one filling of the lye container of your IAM
depends on the CO

To prepare approximately 175 ml of lye, follow the steps below (this is enough to completely fill
the lye reservoir of your measuring instrument).
1.
Take an empty glass cup or a measuring flask with a capacity of at least 200 ml and
place it on an analytical balance. Now set the balance to 0.
2.
Fill the cup or flask with 60 grams of KOH pellets or 40 grams of NaOH pellets.
3.
To prepare 30% KOH solution, add 140 grams of demineralised water and stir until
the grains are dissolved. Please note that the solution will grow hot!
If you decide to make the 20% NaOH solution, you should add 160 grams of
demineralised water.
4.
The lye solution now contains approximately 175 ml of 30% KOH or 20% NaOH.
5.
Allow the solution to cool to room temperature.
6.
Now add 4 grams of ethanol.
If you are planning to make many measurements, you can of course also scale up the
quantities.
ICC
Always wear protective gloves and safety glasses. Lye can
cause serious injuries if it comes into contact with the skin or
eyes. Wash lye out immediately with plenty of running water.
Consult a doctor immediately.
Used lye should be disposed of in compliance with the
requirements of national environmental and health
legislation.
Refresh the lye solution in good time.
