Checking the tractor's required characteristics
The requirements for the tractor concern:
• The total authorised weight.
• The permitted weight per axle.
• The authorised support weight on the tractor's linkage.
• The permissible load capacity for the tyres fitted to the tractor.
All of this information can be found on the data plate or on the registration papers and in the tractor manual.
The weight on the tractor's front axle should be at least 20% of the unladen weight of the tractor.
The tractor must supply the deceleration power (braking) required by the manufacturer when the machine is coupled up to it.
The gross weight of the tractor indicated on the vehicle's registration papers must be greater than the sum of:
- the unladen weight of the tractor
- the ballast
- the total weight of the towed machine
