Two to Four Channel Upgrade Guide
This guide contains information required to upgrade a 2-channel model AirSpeed 5000 or
AirSpeed 5500 server to a 4-channel model server. Once performed, this upgrade enhances the
hardware capabilities and functionality of your system.

Before you perform this procedure, backup your media and take your system off air and
offline. The task of replacing a drive can take a considerable amount of time (up to 24
hours).
To perform this upgrade, you must have purchased one of the following kits:
AirSpeed 5000 - Two to Four Channel Upgrade Kit (for AVC-Intra or MPEG-2 HD).
The upgrade kit will be delivered in two different boxes:

AirSpeed 5000 - Two to Four Channel Upgrade Kit

AirSpeed 5000 - Codec Module Upgrade Kit (AVC-Intra or MPEG-2 HD)
AirSpeed 5500 - Two to Four Channel Upgrade Kit (for AVC-Intra or MPEG-2 HD).
The upgrade kit will be delivered in two different boxes:

AirSpeed 5500 - Codec Module Upgrade Kit (AVC-Intra or MPEG-2 HD)

If your AirSpeed 5000 or AirSpeed 5500 server OS image is later than version 6, it will not have
the LSI MegaRAID Storage Manager software pre-installed. To get the latest LSI MegaRAID
Storage Manager software, it is available to download under LSI's terms and conditions at
http://www.lsi.com.
From the website, you can locate and download the latest Windows-based LSI MegaRAID
Storage Manager software that supports the MegaRAID SAS 9260 4i product.
If your 2-channel AirSpeed 5000 or AirSpeed 5500 server was licensed for H.264 or DNxHD
features, you need to obtain additional licenses to fully activate the new channels on updated
configuration. Contact your Avid Sales representative to obtain the additional licenses. Once the
installation is complete, you must activate the license. License activations are done from the
Activation Page of the AirSpeed 5000 Management Console.

  • Page 14 Upgrading Your AirSpeed 5000 Server to 4-Channel 2. Connect the (2) two eight inch SATA Internal cables to the slots (top and bottom) in the Multi I/O Expansion card. 3. Gently replace the bottom Video I/O board (VIO 2) into the riser card.

Lift the LSI SAS cable that goes along the side of the chassis, so that the Hold Down bracket sits at the bottom of the chassis in its slot, then, tighten the thumbscrew.

However, you had to remove the main cover to add or replace components inside of the server (Video I/O board set).

    Upgrading Your AirSpeed 5000 Server to 4-Channel Turning On the Server When you turn on the power to your AirSpeed 5000 or AirSpeed 5500 server, you must do it in the following order so that it will recognize all of its connected components.
  • Page 19 This procedure contains information on how to insert the additional five (5) media drives into your AirSpeed 5000 or AirSpeed 5500 server so that it will be a 4-channel capable server. Make sure to backup all data before inserting additional media drives in the server. You will lose all of your data.
  • Page 20 Push the handle into the drive carrier. This seats the drive in the server. You’ll hear a click when the drive is fully seated and the handle latches in place. The following illustration show what the 4-channel AirSpeed 5000 server should look like with the additional media drives installed.

If your AirSpeed 5000 server OS image is later than version 6, it will not have the LSI MegaRAID Storage Manager software pre-installed. Earlier AirSpeed 5000 software versions had this software pre-installed on the server.
  • Page 22 This number will change based on your configuration. 6. Once the batch file has finished running, verify that your drives have been re-RAIDed properly. On the AirSpeed 5000 or AirSpeed 5500 server, right-click on Computer, and select Manage. The Computer Management window opens.
