Inspection:
Climb Assist/Fall Arrest
Inspect the Climb Assist/Fall Arrest system for damage: Look for cracks, dents, or deformities.
Look for bending or wear on the hooks, carabiners, wire rope clips, mast, counterweight, guy
(Figure 2)
wire, and safety block.
Inspect the lifeline for cuts, kinks, burns, broken wires or strands, chemical damage, and
severe abrasion. Replace the lifeline if there are six or more randomly distributed broken
wires in one lay, or three or more broken wires in one strand in one lay. A "lay" of wire rope is
the length of wire rope it takes for a strand (larger group of wires) to complete one revolution
or twist along the rope.
Inspect the entire unit for corrosion.
Inspect the wire rope clips for tightness.
Inspect the energy absorber for activation, tearing, or damage.
Safety Block
Remove the four cover bolts and washers. Lift the drum from the housing and inspect the
pawls and springs. Pawls should move freely. The springs should be tight.
Inspect the drum face of the safety block. Heavy grooves indicate a need for replacement.
Inspect the drum bushings. Excessice play indicate a need for replacement.
Clean and reassemble the safety block. Lubricate pawl pivot holes with a good quality, low
temperature silicone grease.
Inspect the bolts for tightness.
Ensure the safety block locks up when the lifeline is jerked sharply. Lockup should be positive
with no slipping.
Mast
Inspect the mast for corrosion damage, bolt tightness, and operational pulleys.
Counterweight
Inspect the counterweight brake lever for wear. Replace if wear is over the wear mark.
Replace the plastic cable guide when replacing the brake lever.
