STARTING THE ENGINE

Troubleshooting Starting Problems

SYMPTOM
Starter motor doesn't turn over (Electric
starter type)
Starter motor turns but the engine
doesn't start. (Electric starter type)
Pull the starter rope slowly until a
resistance is felt, then pull briskly.

POSSIBLE CAUSE
Engine switch OFF.
1.
Shift lever not in NEUTRAL position.
2.
Blown fuse.
3.
Loose battery connector.
4.
Out of fuel.
1.
Vent knob not open.
2.
Primer bulb not squeezed.
3.
Engine flooded.
4.
Weak battery.
5. (Electric starter type)
Plug cap is not installed properly.
6.
Emergency stop switch clip is not set.
7.
REMEDY
Turn engine switch key START. (page 68 )
1.
Set shift lever in NEUTRAL position.
2.

Replace fuse. (page 127 )
3.
Connect battery cable securely. (page 46 )
4.
Supply fuel. (page 51 )
1.
Open vent knob. (page 57 )
2.
Squeeze primer bulb to supply fuel.
3.

Clean and dry spark plug. (page 117 )
4.
Start using emergency starter rope.
5.
Install plug cap securely. (page 118 )
6.
Set emergency stop switch clip. (page 60, 66 )
7.
Have your authorized Honda outboard motor
dealer charge battery.
