9. FAULT FINDING
Problem
Engine will not start
Unsteady engine

Fuel valve closed
Engine key switch in OFF

Engine oil level too low
Contaminated fuel
Partially blocked fuel filter
Dirty or sticking governor
linkage
Carburettor contaminated or
requires adjustment
Orifice restrictor plate
blocked
Blocked variable restrictor
valve
Blocked hoses
Pump not working
Blocked variable restrictor
valve
PUMP circuit breaker tripped Locate fault and reset PUMP
Remedy
Open valve
Set to ON ( I )
Set to RUN
Adjust choke control
Clean and adjust
Clean or replace filter
Top up oil
Drain tank and re-fill
Clean or replace filter
Clean (see engine
maintenance handbook)
Refer to qualified mechanic or
local Briggs & Stratton service
centre
Remove plate and clean
Remove valve sleeve from
body, clean and reassemble
Dismantle if necessary and
flush out with suitable solvent
followed with clean water
Check pump electrical
connections and repair if
necessary. Check pump
motor. Replace if necessary
Remove and clean filter
element
Remove valve sleeve from
body, clean and reassemble
circuit breaker on box under
flushing tank
