8 Troubleshooting
Problem
The engine does not start.
The engine starts, then shuts
down.
The engine starts, then runs
rough.

Cause
No fuel in the fuel tank.
Engine switch in OFF posi-
tion.
The fuel tap is closed.
Fuel cap vent lever is closed. Turn the Fuel cap vent lever
Choke knob is in RUN posi-
tion.
Not enough oil in the engine. Add the recommended oil.
Spark plug is in bad condi-
tion.
Defiled fuel in the carburetor. Turn counterclockwise drain
Low fuel level.
The fuel cap vent lever is
closed.
Incorrect engine oil level.
Defiled fuel in the fuel tank.
Choke stuck or left on.
Air cleaner dirty or clogged.
Spark plug is in bad condi-
tion.
Remedy
Refill the fuel tank.
Turn the Engine switch to ON
position.
Turn the fuel tap to ON posi-
tion.

Pull the Choke knob com-
pletely.
Clean, readjust gap and dry
the spark plug. Replace it if
necessary.

Add fuel to the tank.

Check engine oil level, add
or drain as needed.
Replace fuel in the fuel tank,
clean the fuel filter.
Turn choke to RUN position.
