5. FLUE

Fundamental requisites for correct functioning of the appliance:
the internal section must be preferably circular;
be heat insulated and impermeable and built using material
suitable to resist heat, the combustion products and any
condensation;
not have constrictions and have a vertical course with
deviations not exceeding 45° ;
if already used it must be clean;
technical data in the instruction manual must be respected;
Whenever the flues should have a square or rectangular section the
internal corners must be rounded with radius no smaller than 20 mm.
For the rectangular section the maximum relationship between the
sides must be ≤ 1.5.
A section that is too small causes a decrease in the chimney effect. A
minimum height of 4 m. is recommended.
The following are PROHIBITED and therefore jeopardise the good
functioning of the appliance: fibre cement, galvanised steel, rough or
porous internal surfaces. Picture 5 gives some examples for
solutions.
The minimum section must be 4 dm
appliances whose pipe diameter is 200mm, or 6.25dm
25x25cm) for appliances with diameter exceeding 200mm.
The chimney effect created by your flue must be sufficient but not
excessive.
A flue section that is too large can present a volume that is too big to
heat and therefore cause functioning difficulties for the appliance; in
order to prevent this duct the same for its entire height. A section that
is too small causes the decrease of the chimney effect.
The flue must be at a suitable distance from inflammable
materials or fuel by means of relevant insulation or an air gap.
It is prohibited to transit inside the same system pipes or air adduction channels. It is also prohibited to make mobile
or fixed openings, on the same, for the connection of other different appliances.

5.1. POSITION OF THE CHIMNEY POT

The chimney effect of the flue also depends on the suitability of the chimney pot.
It is therefore indispensable that, if built by artisans, the exit section is twice the internal section of the flue.
As they must always exceed the ridge of the roof, the chimney pot must ensure discharge also in the presence of
wind (Picture 6).
The chimney pot must respond to the following requisites:
have an internal section equal to that of the chimney.
have useful exit section double to that inside the flue.
be built in a way to prevent the penetration of rain, snow of any foreign body into the flue.
be easy to inspect, for any maintenance and cleaning operations.
