General Notes
Customers with Cable Modems
1
The FDX 840 is a combined ethernet
router and Broadband Voice Telephone
Adapter. It is designed to connect
between your cable modem and the
rest of your home network, which might
be a single PC or a number of PCs and
games consoles. Situating your home
network behind the FDX 840 (i.e. LAN
side) ensures that Broadband Voice
does not get disrupted if you decide
to upload data from the PC over the
internet whilst using the telephone.
If you have multiple PCs or games
consoles in the home then you are likely
to already possess an ethernet router.
If so, then connect its WAN port to the
LAN port of the FDX 840.
Customers with ADSL Routers
2
If you have a combined ADSL
modem/router, then the position of the
FDX 840 relative to your home network
may depend on how your home network
connects into the ADSL modem/router.
If the connection to your ADSL router is
hard wired via an ethernet cable, then
we recommend that you connect the
FDX 840 in between your ADSL
modem/router and your PC/home
network. If however your PC/home
network connects to your ADSL router
using for example, wireless or USB, then
although your FDX 840 connects into
the ADSL router using ethernet cable,
data traffic from your PC/home network
will not go via your FDX 840. This doesn't
matter, but voice quality does improve
if home network applications are fed
into the LAN side of the FDX 840 rather
than bypassing it and going direct into
the ADSL router.
