Chapter
I-General
Engine Repair
bolts.
Remove the
engine
lifting
sling.
Install
the starter
assembly. Connect the starter cable and the ground
strap.
Connect
the
clutch
release lever retracting
spring.
Position
the
muffler
inlet pipe on the manifold
fl
ange,
install
the lockwashe
r
and
nuts, then
tighten
~he
nuts
to
~pecifications.
Conn ect
the
fuel
line.
Connect the
generator wires,
the
engine
temperature
sending
unit
wire, the oil pres-
sure sending
unit
wire, and
the
ignition
coil primary
WIfe.
Connect
and adjust
the throttle
control and choke
control. Connect
the
accelerator
rod
and spring.
Con-
nect
the
wi
ndshield
wiper
hose. Remove
the
tape
from
the
carburetor, and
install the
air cleaner.
NOTE:
On trucks
e
quipped with an air compressor,
connecl.
the reservoir to
compressor
line, then in·
stall
th
e
clip
ret.aining
screw.
Tighten
the
reservoir
inlet
fi.tting. Close
I.h
e
reservoir drain cock.
Position
the
radiator
and shroud
assembly in
the
vehicle, and
install the retaining bolts. Connect
the
radiator
and
heater
hoses.
Install the fan
assembly
and
belt and the
air compressor
belt
(if
used)
,
then
adjust
the
belt tension.
Install
the
hood. Fill the
cooling sys-
tem. F ill
the
crankcase with the
proper
grade
and quan-
tity
of engine oil.
Run the
engine
until it rea ches
normal
operating temperature, then check
for
coolant and
oil
leaks.
b. Cab Forward Truck.
The
following procedure applies to
a
ll engines.
(1) REMOVAL. R
a
ise
the
hood. Drain
the cooling
system.
Drain the
crankcase.
Disconnect
the
throttle
return
spring.
Rem
ove
the
floor
mat.
Remove
the
battery cover,
and
disconnect
one of the battery cables to
break
the
electrical
circuit.
Remove
the floor
pan.
Discon nect
the i,gnition coil primary wire.
Disconnect
the
ground
wire at the coil mounting bracket.
Remove
the
screws securing the
100m
clip,
taillight
wire
clip, a
nd
speedometer cable,
then
move
the wires
and speedometer cable out of
the
way. Remove the
distributor
cap
and rotor.
Remove
the
fan
assembly and belt.
R
emove
the
air
cleaner,
and
tape the
carburetor
air
horn
closed.
Dis-
connect the radiator
upper
and
lower hoses.
Disconnect
the
heater
hoses at
the
engine.
Remove
the
upper
and center grille sheet metal.
R
e-
move
the radiator, shroud assembly, and
radiator
to
front
fender
apron
supports.
Disconnect
the hand
throttle control and
the
choke
control.
Disconnect the
accelerator
linkage.
Remove
the
windshield wiper
hose from the intake manifold
(or
vacuum pump inlet).
NOTE
:

quipped
with
an air
compressor,

air

m.ove
the
clip
retaining the
air
lin
e
to
the
front end
of
the
right hand cylinder
bank,
loose
n
the
{ruing at
the
reservoir
end of
the
line
I.hen
lay
I.he
line back against the
engine side
compartment.
Remove
the temperature sending
unit
wire,
and
the
generator wires.
Remove the
oil
dipstick. Remove
the
engine
front
support
nuts and
washers.
Disconnect
the
flexible
fuel line
at the
fuel pump.
Close
off the main
fuel
line
to prevent loss
of
fuel.
Disconnect the muffler inlet
pipe,
and
pull it
away
from
the
manifold
flange.
Remove
the
fl ywheel
hous-
ing lower
cover.
Remove
the fl ywheel
housing to
en-
gine retaining screws.
Disconnect
the starter cable
and
the
battery
ground
strap.
Remov
e
the
starter.
Install the
engine
lifting
sling as shown
in fig.
S.
Posi-
tion
a
floor
jack under the
engine,
and
place a wood
block between th
e
jack
and the oil
pan. R
a ise
the
engine slightly, and
remove
the
front
support
bolts and
rubber pad. Raise
the engine carefully with a hoist,
move
it
forward to clear the transmission input
shaft,
and
remove
it from
the
chassis.
Mount
the engine on a
work
stand using the
appropriate adapter.
Remove
the
engine
lifting
sling.
NOTE: On
vehicles
e
quipped
with
a 279
or
317
cubic
inch
engine, lowe
r the
engine

rem.ave the
right.lwnrl m.anifold.
In
stall
the
engine
mount adapter. Install
the
engine lifting
sling,
then
rais
e
th
e engine
and install it
on
th
e
work stand
(fig.
3).
(2) INSTALLATION. Install
the
engine lifting sling,
take
up
the weight of the
engine
with a
hoist,
then
re-
move
the
engine
from
the
work stand.
NOTE
:
On vehicles
e
qllipped
with
a
279 or 317
cubic
i.n ch
engine, rem.ove
the
engine
f

the work
stand
and
lower it
on
blocks.
Install
the right-hand
manifold.
Install
the
e
ngine lifiing
sling.
Lower
the
engine
carefully into
the engine compart-
ment
until
it rests
on
the floor jack. Align the clutch
disc
a
nd pilot bearing
with
the transmission input
shaft,
then slide the
engine
in until it
contacts
the flywheel
housing.
NOTE:
After
the transl1l.ission input
shaft
enters t.he
clutch
disc, it
may be n ecessary to place the
trans-
lnission
in
gear
and
rolate
the
crankshaft
to align t.he
clutch
disc
splines
with
the
main dri
ve
gear
splines.
Lower
the engine on
the front
support, and
insta
ll the
washers and
nuts. R emove the
engine lifting
sling.
Install the flywheel housing to
engine screws, and
tighten the
screws
to
specifications.
Install the
housi
ng
lower cover. Install the
starter.
Connect the
starter cable
and the
battery cable.
Position
a
new
gasket and
the muffler inlet pipe
on
