this guide does not cover most of the features; it simply allows you to perform other configuration tasks
using a Telnet connection from your management network. To configure other features and interfaces,
refer to the Dell Networking C9000 Series Configuration Guide.
To perform the initial software configuration, you will need the following information from your network
administrator:
Switch IP address
Subnet mask (IP netmask)
Default gateway (router)
Enable secret password
Enable password
Telnet password

Command Modes

After you install the hardware and the boot process completes, the console monitor displays the CLI
prompt for the EXEC command mode.
You must move linearly through the command modes; for example:
Prompt
CLI Command Mode
EXEC
Dell>
Enter enable to access EXEC Privilege mode.
EXEC Privilege
Dell#
Enter configure to access CONFIGURATION mode.
CONFIGURATION
Dell(conf)#
Enter configure terminal batch to access CONFIGURATION BATCH mode.
CONFIGURATION BATCH
Dell(conf-b)#
Enter the exit command to move back up one command mode level. Enter the end command to move
directly to EXEC Privilege mode.

Configuring the Enable Password

To access EXEC Privilege mode, you must use the enable command.
Configure a password as a basic security measure. When using a console connection, EXEC Privilege
mode is unrestricted by default; it cannot be reached by a VTY connection if you do not configure a
password. There are two types of enable passwords:
enable password stores the password in the running/startup configuration using a DES encryption
method.
enable secret stores the password in the running/startup configuration by using a stronger, MD5
encryption method.
Dell Networking recommends using the enable secret password.
