PERSONNEL WORKING ON RADIO TRANSMITTING EQUIPMENT’, also Sub-clauses 3.2, 3.7 and 22.1 of the Standard. To prevent the risk of personal injury or loss related to equipment malfunction Advantech uses the following symbols for safety related information. For your own safety, please read the information carefully BEFORE operating the equipment.
  • Page 8 SSPB-K40-CSE ----------------------------------------------- WARNING --------------------------------------------------- When supplying power to this equipment, use the 3-pin connector provided to connect to a grounded power outlet; also use a ground strap between the station’s ground bus and the ground screw located on unit. If power is supplied without grounding the equipment, there is a risk of receiving a severe or fatal electric shock.
  • Page 9 The permissible levels of exposure are quite low in comparison to the power levels of the equipment built by Advantech (e.g. less than 10 mW versus 4 to 700 W delivered by different units). The permissible levels are currently being studied by a number of organizations. In the past the U.S.

Technologies, Inc. 2.2 DESCRIPTION The SSPB-K40-CSE is a 40 W Ku-Band hub-mount (outdoor) Solid State Power Block Up- Converter (SSPB). The entire SSPB is self-contained and is intended for mounting near the hub of the antenna. It incorporates DC main power supply and forced air-cooling system, see Figure 1: Product Outline (page 12).
  • Page 11: Up-Converter Assembly

SSPB-K40-CSE 2.2.2 U ONVERTER SSEMBLY The Up-Converter converts the input L-Band carrier into a Ku-Band carrier. An input diplexer separates the 10 MHz frequency reference and 950 - 1450 MHz L-Band signals, both fed at the input co-axial interface connector. A block up-converter using a low phase noise RF oscillator, which is phase locked to the 10 MHz external reference, is required to translate the 950 - 1450 MHz L-Band frequency-range to 14.000 - 14.500 GHz Ku-Band frequencies.

SSPB-K40-CSE 2.5 ALARM/INDICATE BOARD The Alarm/Indicate Board provides: • Status indicator via Form-C relay contacts: Fault, Alarm, Out of lock, and Output Power Level monitoring. • Mute mode, which may be asserted by a remote current mode MUTE signal. A 20 mA current may be optionally either MUTE or ENABLE signal.

UNPACKING AND INSTALLATION This section contains instructions for site preparation, unpacking and installation of the SSPB. 3.1 INITIAL INSPECTION Inspect the shipping container for damage. If the container or cushioning material is damaged, immediately contact the carrier that delivered the equipment and submit a damage report. Failure to do so could invalidate future claims.

RF component connector. A destructive pin depth is one that is too long in respect to the reference plane of the connector. The center pin of the connectors used by ADVANTECH has a precision tolerance measured in mils (1/1000 inch). The mating connectors of various suppliers may not be precision types.
  • Page 22: Cooling Considerations

SSPB-K40-CSE 3.3.4 C OOLING ONSIDERATIONS The SSPB is forced-air cooled. The cooling fan is configured for 48 VDC operation, supplied by the main power supply of the unit. The actual voltage delivered to the cooling fan may vary between 11 VDC and 64 VDC, depending on the temperature sensed at the hot spot of the power amplifier and thus allowing for a variable, temperature dependent, rotation speed of the cooling fan.

The Up-converter is provided with interfaces that can be used to connect it with several optional external devices. The interfaces for this model (SSPB-K40-CSE) are listed bellow: 1. Discrete Interface (J3): This opto-isolated remote offers essential control and monitoring via individual signals for unit command and status.

SSPB-K40-CSE 4.1.1 F UNCTIONAL ESCRIPTION The Discrete Interface provides: • Status indication - FAULT, ALARM, HRP (High Reflected Power), OUT OF LOCK. • MUTE mode, which may be asserted by a remote current mode MUTE signal (20 mA). The Discrete Interface is connected to the Alarm/Indicate Board and continuously (in the normal condition) monitors the status of the SSPA.

SSPB-K40-CSE 5. INITIAL POWER ON AND CHECKOUT This section describes the procedure for turning on the SSPB for the first time. It also describes the steps for initial checkout of the system. Before proceeding with the steps in this section, read it completely to become familiar with normal operation of the SSPB.
  • Page 28: Operation

SSPB-K40-CSE 6. OPERATION This section describes the normal operation of the SSPB. The SSPB features an integrated Alarm/Indicate Board that accepts control input and provides SSPB status and metering. The design of this equipment allows minimum operator intervention and maintenance.
