Is it possible to fry an AGM battery using one of the Ctek battery maintainers? I bought a Ctek MUS 4.3 over 15 years ago, and it has performed flawlessly—attach the leads, plug it in, choose the mode setting. It’s been used on the original battery (don’t recall what that was, probably whatever was in the car when bought new by the original owner like 24 years ago), and on the first battery I later purchased for the car. That was a DieHard, which I picked up in 2014 and lasted like 9 years. I replaced the DieHard in Mar, 2023, with an Everstart Platinum H6 AGM battery, and last winter (’23-’24) used the Ctek as before. (It’s a sports car, I store it in the winter.) So then, this winter I once again repeated the procedure, same as always. I checked the car recently (it’s actually at the home of a friend, who goes to Florida over the winter and rents me garage space each winter) and noticed on the Ctek an illuminated red error light. On the Step 1-8 charging process, it made it to Step 5 (‘Analyze’). I’ve always had the thing set at the ‘Snowflake’ setting, which the manual describes as the “Cold weather program. Use for charging at low temperatures and for power AGM batteries like Optima and Odyssey.” It’s winter, it’s Ohio, it’s cold, so that seemed to be the correct choice. It’s always worked for me over the past 15-16 years, on that setting. What happened this year? I thought these battery maintainers were supposed to be a ‘set it and forget it’ kind of deal? The battery’s only 2 years old (still within warranty), but did I do something wrong? Or is it more likely that I just got a lemon on the battery? (I'd still like to know for sure I'm doing this right—they may ask when I go to return the battery.) Thanks for any guidance.

The CTEK MUS 4.3 is designed for charging and maintaining 12V lead-acid batteries, including AGM batteries. It has a selectable charging voltage of 14.4V, 14.7V, and 15.8V, with a specific setting for cold conditions (14.7V), making it suitable for winter charging. Since Everstart Platinum H6 is an AGM battery, the MUS 4.3 should not damage it during winter charging if used correctly.

@Mr. Anderson Okay, but the key words in your response seem to be "if used correctly." I think I do that. As indicated earlier, I simply attach the leads to the battery (pos to pos, neg to neg), plug the unit into a standard power outlet, and select the mode (snowflake/winter). I don't do anything ridiculously stupid like leave the car out in the rain with the hood open, leave a wrench laying across the battery posts, etc. But might there be something else (something less obvious) that I'm doing wrong here?

So...you guys only give boilerplate, computer-generated answers to questions that people send in? You never actually read them and have a knowledgeable, flesh-and-blood person respond?? It's not a good look...
