Remote Connections with Fiber Cable

Fiber optic technology allows for longer cabling than any other
media type (up to 550 meters for 1 Gbps fiber). The TigerSwitch
can serve as a collapsed backbone, providing direct connectivity
for a widespread LAN. The Gigabit module can be used for a
high-speed connection between floors in the same building, or to
connect to other buildings in a campus setting. The figure below
illustrates a TigerSwitch connecting multiple segments with fiber
cable.

Making VLAN Connections

VLANs can be based on port groups, or each data frame can be
explicitly tagged to identify the VLAN group it belongs to. When
using port-based VLANs, ports can either be assigned to any
number of groups. Port-based VLANs are suitable for small
networks. A single switch can be easily configured to support
several VLAN groups for various organizational entities (such as
Finance and Marketing).
