Definition of Terms
This section defines terms that are used both in this chapter and
"Performance Tests" on page 31.
Generally, all specifications apply for the given environmental
conditions and after warmup time.
Measurement principles are indicated. Alternative measurement
principles of equal value are also acceptable.

Center wavelength

The center wavelength is defined as the spectral center of gravity. For
a Fabry-Perot type laser source with discrete longitudinal modes, this
definition can be expressed as:
λ
where:
P
=power levels of the individual longitudinal lines
i
λ
=wavelengths of the individual longitudinal lines
i

Spectral width

The spectral width of an optical source is defined as the source's full-
width half-maximum (FWHM) spectral width, ∆λ
continuous spectrum, e.g., the spectrum of a Fabry-Perot type laser
diode, the spectral width is defined as the FWHM of the spectral
envelope, to be calculated from the RMS spectral width, ∆λ
