Section 4. Hazardous Identification (Emergency Overview)
Toner is a fine, black powder possessing no immediate hazard. There are no anticipated carcinogenic effects
from exposure based on animal tests performed using toner. When used as intended according to instructions,
studies do not indicate any symptoms of fibrosis will occur.

Carcinogenicity : In 1996 the IA R C reevaluated carbon black as a G roup 2B carcinogen (possible human carcinogen).
This classification is given to chem ic als for w hich there is inadequate hum anevidence, but sufficient ani-
mal evidence on w hich to base an opinion of carcinogenicity. Theclassification is based upon the devel-
opment of lung tum ors in rats receiving chronic inhalationexposures to free carbon black at levels that
induce particle overload of the lung. Studiesperform ed in anim al m odels other than rats did not show
any as sociation betw een carbon black and lung tum ors. M oreover, a tw o-year cancer bioassay using a
typical toner preparation containing carbon black dem onstrated no association betw een toner exposure
and tum or developm ent in rats.
Chronic Effect :
Prolonged inhalation of excessive dust m ay cause lung damage. It is attributed to "lung ov erloading", a
generic response to exc essive am ounts of any dust retained in the lungs for a prolonged interv al. U se of
this product as intended does result in inhalation of excessive dust. In a study in rats by chronic inhala-
tion exposure to a typical toner, a m ild to moderate degree of lung fibrosis was observed in 92% of rats
in the high concentration (16m g/m
