Section 4: Operation

Return to Utility Source Side

Manually actuate switch to return manual operating
1.
handle to the DOWN position.
Remove manual operating handle from movable
2.
contact carrier arm. Return handle to storage bracket.

Voltage Checks

DANGER
Electrocution. High voltage is present at
transfer switch and terminals. Contact with live
terminals will result in death or serious injury.
DANGER
Electrocution. Turn utility supply OFF before
working on utility connections of the transfer
switch. Failure to do so will result in
death or serious injury.

Utility Voltage Checks

Turn ON the UTILITY power supply to the transfer
1.
switch using the breaker in main distribution panel.
With an accurate AC voltmeter, check for correct
2.
voltage.
Measure across MTS terminal lugs N1 and N2
3.
(Approximately 240 VAC).
Measure across MTS terminal lugs N1 to N3 and
4.
N2 to N3 (Approximately 120 VAC).
Verify that UTILITY supply voltage is correct and
5.
compatible with the transfer switch ratings.

Generator Voltage Checks

Connect the generator to the transfer switch.
1.
Start the generator.
2.
With an accurate AC voltmeter and frequency
3.
meter, check the no-load, voltage and frequency.
Measure across ATS terminal lugs E1 to E2; E1 to
E3 and E2 to E3.

When certain that generator supply voltage is
4.
correct and compatible with the transfer switch
ratings, turn OFF the generator supply to the
transfer switch.
Set the generator main circuit breaker (CB1) to
5.
OFF or OPEN.
Shut down the generator.

NOTE: Do NOT proceed until generator AC output volt-
age and frequency are correct and within stated limits.

Generator Tests Under Load

(000129)
(000123)
Checking Electric Operation
(Portable Generator Only)
To check the system for proper electrical operation,
proceed as follows:
58-63 Hz
240-246 VAC
120-123 VAC
120-123 VAC
Homelink Upgradeable Manual Transfer Switch Owner's Manual
If so equipped, set the generator main circuit
1.
breaker to OFF or OPEN.
Turn OFF or OPEN all load circuits.
2.
Set the utility service disconnect circuit breaker to
3.
OFF or OPEN.
Manually actuate the transfer switch main contacts
4.
to the Standby position. See
Start the generator. When engine starts, let it
5.
stabilize for a few minutes.
The generator now powers all LOAD circuits.
6.
Check generator operation under load as follows:
Turn on electrical loads to the full rated wattage/
amperage capacity of the generator. DO NOT
OVERLOAD.
With maximum rated load applied, check voltage
and frequency across transfer switch terminals E1
and E2. Voltage should be greater than 230 VAC
(240 VAC system). Frequency should be greater
than 58 Hz.
Let the generator run under rated load for at least
30 minutes. With unit running, listen for unusual
noises, vibration, overheating, etc., that might
indicate a problem.
When generator tests under load are complete,
7.
turn OFF all load circuits.
Let the generator run at no-load for several
8.
minutes. Then, shut down the generator.
Manually move the main switch contacts back to
9.
the utility position.
Place the manual handle in its storage bracket.
10.
Verify generator is OFF.
1.
Connect the electrical harness six position quick
2.
connector (from the lights and rocker switch of the
front panel) to the main harness of the transfer
switch.
Install the front cover of the transfer switch with
3.
four (4) screws provided. See Figure 3.2.
Turn ON the utility power supply to the transfer
4.
switch, using the means provided (such as utility
main line circuit breaker). The Utility Light will
illuminate only if the transfer switch is in the
Generator position, and utility voltage is present.
