When this point has been reached it means that all
the play in. the bearings has been taken up, and
any further tightening of the cone will put an actual
thrust on the steel balls.
This must be avoided at
all costs, and the correct thing to do when the play
has ail been. taken up 3.5 just described, is to un-
screw the come a small fraction of a. turn.
When
the wheel is now grasped by the tyre and moved
sideways it should be possible to feel a. small amount
of play, or shake. which should not exceed about
ilfi4th of an inch (Le. just about enough to feel
and no more).
When. this state of adjustment has
been arrived at. lock the adiusting come by returning
the locking washer to its original position (cone may
have to be stacked of? slightly more if flats are not
in line).
Tighten rear spindle nutA and check play
once more' Check that the chain sprocket is quite
free to turn in the free wheel (antiaslockwise)
direction.
It may be found that the hearing has
tightened a. little. and readjustment will be required
making allowance for the effect oi the final tighten—
ing of the spindle nut.
Hub Lock Ring Adjustment.
This lock ring (Part No. 62-297) located immed-
iately behind the chain sprocket, is locked firmly
home before the unit is despatched. from the works.
However, every engine, irrespective of type. tends
during the initial runningrin period, to bed down.
In the case of the \Vingcd Wheel this can sometime
leave the Iock ring a little slack.
The symptoms
are shown in excessive play at the wheel rim which
can be mistakenly attributed to a slack wheel
bearing adjusting cone.
Under no circumstances
should over-adjustmcnt of the wheel bearings be
permitted for this will only result in collapse of the
wheel bearings, ,lcaving the wheel play still in
evidence.
