12. Before beginning lathe operation, rotate
workpiece by hand to ensure there is safe
clearance on all sides.
Keep lathe tool resting on tool rest the
ENTIRE time it is in contact with workpiece
or when preparing to make contact between
lathe tool and workpiece. Otherwise, spin-
ning workpiece could force lathe tool out
of your hands or entangle your hands with
workpiece. Failure to heed this warning
could result in serious personal injury.
Spindle Turning Tips:
When turning the lathe ON, stand away from
the path of the spinning workpiece until the
spindle reaches full speed and you can verify
that the workpiece will not come loose.
Use the slowest speed when starting or stop-
ping the lathe.
Select the right speed for the size of workpiece
that you are turning (refer to Figure 27 on
Page 26).
Keep the turning tool on the tool rest the
ENTIRE time that it is in contact with the
workpiece.
Learn the correct techniques for each tool
you will use. If you are unsure about how to
use the lathe tools, read books or magazines
about lathe techniques, and seek training
from experienced and knowledgeable lathe
users.
Eye injuries or respiratory problems can
occur while operating this machine. Wear
personal protective equipment to reduce
your risk from these hazards.

Faceplate Turning

Faceplate Turning
Faceplate turning is when a workpiece is mounted
to the faceplate, which is then mounted to the
headstock spindle, as shown in Figure 38. This
type of turning is usually done with open-faced
workpieces like bowls or plates.
