SOURCE PROGRAM PREPARATION,
COMPILATION, EXECUTION
REFERENCE FORMAT
The reference format is the standard method for describing COBOL source
programs.
It
is described in terms of character positions in 80-character
source records read from the standard input file (INP) or from the dsi
supplied by the user in the UCBL control card parameter, I
=
dsi.
The rules for spacing given in the discussion of the reference format take
precedence over all other rules for spacing.
Each division must be written according to the reference format rules; and
the divisions must be ordered as follows:
Identification Division
Environment Division
Data Division
Procedure Division

Each source record is equivalent to one line of the COBOL coding sheet. This
source line is divided into five areas as follows:
