- When adding o il, do not let oil drip onto hot
engine components. The re could be risk of a
fire.
- You must secure the cap on the oil filler
opening correctly so that oil does not leak
out onto the hot eng ine and exhaust system
when the eng ine is running, because this is
a fire hazard.
- Always clean skin thorough ly if it comes into
contact with engine oil.

Note
- The oil level must not be above the @
range, because th is can cause damage to
the catalytic converter or the eng ine. Con-
tact an authorized Audi dea ler or authorized
Audi Service Facility t o have excess oil ex-
tracted if necessary.
- Do not mix any additional lubricants into
the engine oil. Damage ca use by such addi-
tives is not covered by the warranty.

For the sake of the environment
- Oil should never enter the sewer system o r
come into contact with the ground.
- Pay attention to legal requirements when
disposing of empty oi l containers.
Changing the engine oil
We recommend that have your oil changed by an
authorized Audi dealer or a qualified service sta-
tion.
Before you check anyth ing in the eng ine compart-
ment, always read and heed all WARNINGS
~page236.
The engine oil must be changed accord ing to the
intervals specified in your Warranty & Mai nte-
nance booklet. This is very important because the
lub ricating properties of oil d iminish gradually
d uring normal vehicle use.
Under some circumstances the eng ine o il should
be changed more frequently . Change oil more of-
ten if yo u d rive most ly short dis t ances, operat e
the vehicle in dusty areas or u nder predomina ntly
Che cking a nd Filling
stop-and -go traffic conditions, or have your vehi-
cle where temperatures remain below freezing
for extended periods.
Detergent add itives in the oi l will make fresh oil
look dark after the engine has been running for a
short time. This is normal and is not a reason to
change the oi l more often than recommended.
Beca use of the problem of proper disposal, along
with the special tools and necessary expertise re-
quired, we strongly recommend that you have
you r oil changed by an authorized Audi dealer or
a q ualified service station.
If you choose to change your oil yourself, please
note the following important information:

To reduce the risk of persona l injury if you
must change the eng ine oil in you r vehicle
yourself:
- Wear eye protection.
- To reduce the risk of burns from hot engine
oil, let t he engine cool down to the touch.
- When removing the oil drain plug with your
fingers, stay as far away as possible. Always
keep your forearm parallel to the ground to
help prevent hot oil from running down your
arm.
- Drain the oil into a container designed for
this purpose, one large enough to hold at
least the tota l amount of oil in your engine.
- Engine oil is poisonous. Keep it well out of
the reach of children.
- Continuous contact with used engine oil is
harmful to your skin. Always protect your
skin by washing oil off thoroughly with soap
and water.

Never mix oil additives with you r engine oil.
These additives can damage your engine and
adversely affect yo ur Audi Limited New Vehi-
cle Warranty.
