Troubleshooting

Before contacting Focal Technologies for technical assistance, this troubleshooting section should provide
guidance for common problems. The Model 914 Diagnostic GUI is an essential troubleshooting tool. It allows
users to quickly identify problems. Setting up the GUI and connecting it to the 914 system is a required first
step.
Here are some common problems, and how best to solve them.
1. Diagnostic GUI is not connecting to the 914-HDE
a. Check connection status to Header J8 on the 914-HDE console card. Any loose connections?
Any shorts? Verify pinout as per Section 4.0.
b. Verify the COM port used in the GUI, does it match the one connected to the 914-HDE?
c. Is the GUI installed up to date? Check the Focal website and look for 914-0401-00:

d. Is the 914-HDE powered up with 5 V or 12 V? Is the power LED D6 lit?
2. The card I want to see in the 914 Diagnostic GUI is not showing up.
a. Press "Stop" and then "Start" at the bottom of the GUI to refresh the displayed cards.
b. Verify that the cards have compatible firmware versions per Section 8.1.
c. Verify the optical link in the link tab in the GUI, or by the LEDs on the PCBA.
d. Verify the switch settings of the expansion cards.
e. Verify power status via LEDs.
3. Power issues:
a. Verify that the green power LED D6 is lit on the 914-HDE. The power fault LED D5 is lit red
during over, under or reverse voltage events.
b. For larger stacks using more power, voltage drop can occur over the power leads. Verify the
power received at the 914-HDE is greater than 4.5 V. If not:

c. Verify voltage rails and inputs via the diagnostic GUI.
4. Optical issues:
a. Verify received optical power via the GUI in the SFP tab. All values should have green
backgrounds to indicate acceptable levels.
b. Too much optical power is a saturation condition. Attenuation is required in the fiber link.
c. Too little optical power could be due to:
