The 169GA is a sample holder of the Hartshorn and
Ward type," used for the measurement of dielectric constant,
dissipation factor, and volume resistivity of 2-inch-diameter, or
less, disks of dielectric material in accordance with ASTM test
method D-150. I t is suitable for any flat sample whose largest
diameter is not over 2 inches and whose thickness is not over
0.3 inch.
I t can be used with resonant circuits for susceptance
variation or frequency-variation measurements, with the Types
1615A and 71GC Capacitance Bridges, the 874-LBB and
900-LB Slotted Lines, the 1602-B and 1609 irnmittance meters,
the 1644-A Megohm Bridge, and the 1650-B I mpedance Bridge.

A precision micrometer screw with a large knob drives a
movable grounded electrode with respect to a fixed, insulated
electrode. An accurately divided drum indicates the electrode
spacing. The micrometer screw is electrically shunted by a
metal bellows to assure a positive, low resistanceconnection.
A release mechanism automatically disengages the drive to p r e
vent damage when the electrodes are in contact. The movable
electrode adjusts itself to the plane of the specimen surface.
The vernier capacitor with the micrometer screw is for
use in the susceptance-variation method of measurement, and
for precise C balance with low-loss samples.
The assembly is mounted in a rugged aluminum casting
which shields it on four sides. Tow removable cover plates,
which permit access t o the electrodes, complete the shielding.
The holder can be mounted on either horizontal or vertical
panels.
