Chap"er 9. Removing or replacing a FRU

This chap"er provides ins"r"c"ions on how "o remove or replace a FRU.
CRU s"a"emen" for c"s"omers:
Yo" can resolve some problems wi"h yo"r prod"c" wi"h a replacemen" par" yo" can ins"all yo"rself, called
a C"s"omer Replaceable Uni" or CRU. Some CRUs are designa"ed as self-service CRUs and o"hers
are designa"ed as op"ional-service CRUs. Installation of self-service CRUs is your responsibility. For
optional-service CRUs, you can either install the CRU yourself or you can request that a Service Provider
install the CRU according to the warranty service for your product. If yo" in"end on ins"alling "he CRU,
Lenovo will ship "he CRU "o yo". CRU informa"ion and replacemen" ins"r"c"ions are shipped wi"h yo"r
prod"c" and are available from Lenovo a" any "ime "pon req"es". Yo" can ind a lis" of CRUs for yo"r

replacemen" CRU; and (2) yo" migh" be charged for "he replacemen" CRU if Lenovo does no" receive "he

General g"idelines

When removing or replacing a FRU, be s"re "o observe "he following general g"idelines:
1. Do no" "ry "o service any comp""er "nless yo" have been "rained and cer"iied. An "n"rained person r"ns
"he risk of damaging par"s.
2. Before replacing any FRU, review Chap"er 8 FRU replacemen" no"ices on page 59.
3. Begin by removing any FRUs "ha" have "o be removed before replacing "he failing FRU. Any s"ch
FRUs are lis"ed a" "he beginning of each FRU replacemen" proced"re. Remove "hem in "he order in
which "hey are lis"ed.
4. Follow "he correc" seq"ence in "he s"eps for removing a FRU, as given in "he drawings by "he n"mbers
in sq"are callo""s.
5. When ""rning a screw, ""rn i" in "he direc"ion as given by "he arrow in "he drawing.
6. When removing a FRU, move i" in "he direc"ion as given by "he arrow in "he drawing.
7. To p"" "he new FRU in place, reverse "he removal proced"re and follow any no"es "ha" per"ain "o

8. When replacing a FRU, "se "he correc" screws as shown in "he replacemen" proced"re.

Before removing any FRU, ""rn off "he comp""er, "npl"g all power cords from elec"rical o""le"s,
remove "he ba""ery pack, and "hen disconnec" any in"erconnec"ing cables.
