• Always install DIMMs in the following order as illustrated:

To install or replace a memory module, do the following:
1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer. Then, disconnect
all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer.
2. Remove the computer cover. See "Removing the computer cover" on page 111.
3. Remove the direct cooling air baffle. See "Removing and reinstalling the direct cooling air baffle" on
page 112.
4. Lay the computer on its side for easier access to the system board.
5. Locate the memory slots. See "Locating parts on the system board" on page 35.
6. Remove any parts that might prevent your access to the memory slots. Depending on your computer
model, you might need to remove the optical drive bracket for easier access to the memory slots. See
"Removing and reinstalling the optical drive bracket" on page 124.
7. Depending on whether you are installing or replacing a memory module, do one of the following:
• If you are replacing an old memory module, open the retaining clips and gently pull the memory
module out of the memory slot.
