Afterthe sparkplug is seated,tightenwith a spark plugwrenchto
compressthe washer.
NOTE:Wheninstallinga newsparkplug,tighten 1/2-turnafter the
spark plugseatsto compressthe washer.Whenreinstalling a used
spark plug,tighten 1/8-to 1/4-turn after the sparkplug seatsto
compressthe washer.
Thespark plug mustbe tightenedsecurely. A loosespark plug can
becomevery hotand can damagethe engine.
Cleaning
the Engine
If the engine hasbeen running,allowit to cool for at least halfan hour
beforecleaning.Periodicallyremovedirt build-upfromengine.Before
servicingthe engine,removethecarburetorcover and/orblower
housing.Cleanthe dirt and debrisfromthe followingareas:
CoolingFins
Air IntakeScreenor RecoilStarter/Flywheel G uardAreas
SparkPlugConnection
Levers
LinkageArea
Guards
Carburetor
EngineHead
Removingdebriswill insureadequatecooling,correctenginespeed
and reducethe riskof fire.
Do not spraythe enginewithwater to cleanit becausethewater
couldcontaminate the fuel. Usinga gardenhoseor pressurewashing
equipmentcanalso forcewater intothe muffleropening.Waterthat
passesthroughthe mufflercan entertheenginecylinderand cause
damage.
Accumulation of debrisaroundthe mufflercouldcausea fire. Inspect
and cleanbeforeever_use.
LUBRICATION
Lubricatethe pivot pointson the controlhandleand the extension
springat the end of thecontrol cablewith a lightoil onceeveryseason
and beforethe snow throweris putinto storageatthe end of the
season.
ADJUSTMENTS
Shave
Plate
Tocheckthe adjustmentof the shaveplate,placethe machineon a
level surface.Thewheels,shaveplateand augerpaddlesshouldall
contactthe levelsurface.Notethat if the shaveplateis adjustedtoo
high, snowmay blowunderthe auger housing.If the shaveplatewears
out excessively, o r the snowthrowerdoesnot self-propel,the shave
plate maybe too low to the groundand needsto be adjusted.
NOTE: On newsnow throwersor machineswith a newshaveplate
installed,the auger paddlesmay be slightlyoff the ground.
Toadjust the shaveplate )roceedas follows:
1.
Runthe snowthroweruntilthe fueltank is empty.
2.
Pullthe startercorduntil resistanceis felt.Then tip the snow
throwerback untilit restson the handles.To ensurethat the snow
throwerdoesnot tip forward,it maybe necessaryto securethe
handleto the groundwith a block or other object.
3.
Loosenthefourflangelocknutsand carriagescrewswhichsecure
the shaveplatetothe housing.SeeFigure14.Movethe shave
plateto theappropriate positionand retighten thenuts andscrews
securely.

Tip the snowthrowerback to theoperatingpositionand pull the
starterhandlea few timesto see if it is difficultto pull.
5.
If the starteris difficultto pull,removethe spark plugand pull the
handle severaltimesto ensurethat anyoil trappedin theengine
head is removed.
Oil maycome out of the sparkplug hole whenit is removedand the
starterhandle ispulled.
6.
Inspectthe spark plug.If it is wet, cleanoff any oil before
re-installing.
