Operating Instructions

Starting and Stopping
Engine
It is imperative that the brake system be
checked for wear and proper operation and
that all safety checks found in the accompa-
nying Snowmobile Safety Handbook be
performed before attempting to start the
engine. Also, on the 570 cc, be sure the
correct carburetor main jets for the oper-
ating temperature, altitude, and gasoline
are being used. After the engine has been
started, check the headlights (high and low
beam), taillight, and brakelight to be sure
they are working properly and adjusted cor-
rectly. Make sure all lights are clean to pro-
vide maximum illumination. The headlight
and taillight must be clean and must be illu-
minated whenever the engine is running.
1. Test the operation of the brake system
by compressing the brake lever. The
brake lever must feel firm when com-
pressed; then while holding the brake
lever in the compressed position, mea-
sure the distance between the brake
lever and the handlebar. The distance
must be greater than 2.54 cm (1 in.).
2. Check the fluid level in the reservoir.
The brake fluid level must be visible
in the sight glass. Add Arctic Cat
approved brake fluid as necessary.
NOTE: If the sight glass appears
dark, there is a sufficient amount of
fluid in the reservoir.
! WARNING
Do not start the engine if the brake sys-
tem is not functioning properly. Service
the brake system or have it properly
repaired prior to operating the snowmo-
bile. Serious personal injury or even
death may occur if the brake system is
not operating properly.
3. Test the throttle control lever by
completely compressing and releas-
ing it several times. The lever
MUST return to the idle position
quickly and completely.
On the F5/1100 cc, always check the
coolant level before starting the
engine.
4. Move the emergency stop switch to
the UP or RUN position.
5. Insert key into ignition switch; then
rotate key to the RUN position.
6. On the 570 cc for a cold engine,
move the choke lever to the full-
choke position. If the engine is
warm, choking is normally not nec-
essary.
NOTE: On the 570 cc when the
engine is being started with aid of
the choke, DO NOT COMPRESS THE
THROTTLE CONTROL LEVER. If the
throttle control lever is compressed,
the engine will not start because the
741-328C
gas/air mixture will be too lean. To
start a warm engine, however, the
throttle control lever may have to be
compressed slightly.
NOTE: On the F5/1100 cc when a
cold engine is being started, DO NOT
COMPRESS THE THROTTLE CON-
TROL LEVER. If the throttle control
lever is compressed, the engine will
not start because the fuel/air mixture
will be too lean.
7. On the F5/570 cc if using the recoil,
pull the recoil handle slowly until resis-
tance is felt; then give a short quick
pull. Repeat until the engine starts.
