ROUTINE SERVICE
·
Fill the plastic coolant reservoir to the HOT LEVEL mark. Install
the coolant reservoir cap.
· Normal vehicle operation will stabilize the coolant level.
·
If the reservoir requires,addition of
coolant,
follow procedure under
"Checking Coolant
Level."
Coolant Specification
Use only a permanent-type coolant that meets Ford Specification ESE-
M97B18-C, such as Ford Cooling System Fluid. Do not use alcohol or
methanol
antifreeze,
or mix them with the speCified coolant.
You can use plain water to fIll your cooling system in an emergency, but
replace it with the specified coolant as quickly as possible to avoid damage
to the
system.
When you are using only water in the system, do not let
the engine run
hot.
Checking Hoses
Because engine hoses are constantly exposed to high underhood tempera-
tures in modern
cars,
they eventually deteriorate. To avoid a loss of cool-
ant
,
which could damage your car
engine,
periodically inspect all engine
and heater system hoses for
deterioration, leaks,
and loose hose clamps
as specified in the maintenance schedule. Correct any defect that you find
immediately.
Transmission Fluid
Checking Fluid Level
Check the fluid level in the automatic transmission at the mileage intervals
shown on the Scheduled Maintenance Services Chart in this manual.
First start the engine and run it until normal operating temperatures and
engine idling conditions are stabilized.
Then,
apply the brakes and move
the transmission shift lever
·
through all of the gear
positions,
allowing suffi-
cient time in each range to engage the transmission, stopping at the P
(PARK) position. Apply the parking brake. With the engine still running
and the car on a level surface, wipe off the dipstick cap located at the ex-
treme right rear of the
engine.
Pull the dipstick out of the transmission fill-
er tube
,
wipe it
clean,
and push
it
all the way back into the tube. Pull the
dipstick out and check the
level.
The fluid level should be between the
ADD and DON'T ADD lines. Push the dipstick into the tube
,
making sure
it is fully seated.
